About the Author

George Bancroft (1800–1891) was an American historian and statesman, dubbed the “father of American history” for his comprehensive history of the origins and development of the United States. He was Secretary of the Navy for during the Polk administration, and established the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845.
