I was fortunate enough to read an advanced copy of this book and I can say, without reservation, every parent owes it to their children to read this book. The knowledge is powerful and you will be equipped to challenge, encourage, bond with, and open lines of communication with your children. My children are still young and people often tell me to enjoy them now, because someday they'll be teenagers. That sentiment saddens and even scares me a little. Of course nobody has a silver bullet, but Dr. Melheim presents strategies that, already, my children have engaged in and I am hopeful that today's precedent will be tomorrow's life-line.
I cannot recommend Melheim's book enough. It is based soundly within both Brain Science and Systems Theory. This is fancy way of saying that it puts Christian Education back in the setting where it belongs - within the family. Melheim's method is not a quick fix. It is a long-term method of teaching, rearing, and caring for your offspring. I am planning on using the book with all of the families/parents at the church I serve. This is the first book ever that I have thought of doing this with. I believe in it that much.
Just received my book in the mail and spent the evening reading through it!! So excited to have fun as a family growing our faith together. Rich gives wonderful details , stories and ideas about how to make this an adventure and not a chore! Join the journey of SHARE, READ,TALK, PRAY & BLESS - it will be worth it......
An exceptional book with practical steps that will make a difference for every family. Whether your kids are infants or teens, this book offers encouragement, insight and a foundation that will make a difference in the lives of families and individuals for a lifetime.
With rock solid research, practical advice, and great stories from real families, this book is a must read for any parent trying to create a simple and fun routine for family bedtime that will have benefits that last a lifetime. Since hearing Rich speak about his ideas, I have been using them with my kids. I can't tell you what a difference it has made for us--creating a safe space to communicate with each other, pray for needs, and bless each other before saying goodnight. No matter what your faith, this routine can be used to share it and bring your family closer! I'd recommend giving this as a gift to anyone with a new baby, so they can start right away to build this routine into their lives.
Using the nightly ritual detailed in this book, my family has been enriched beyond my expectation. The book itself is a quick read, filled with great stories from the author's life and the lives of other families who have used the FAITH5 to grow faith in their own homes. I've got a 4 year old girl. My husband and I had no idea how to help her get to know God at her level, or how to teach her the basic things like prayer and bible stories. This made it easy to get started. Now our daughter reminds us that it is God time, and she wants to pray for her dad and me. I'm planning on getting copies for all the new parents in my life and maybe the newlyweds too.
Finally a book with 5 easy steps to enrich bedtime faith formation. I always spent time in prayer with my children, but this adds so much more to our bedtime routine. Discussion about the days highs and lows bring forth way more information and flows right into a discussion about what God has to say about our struggles and joys. Prayers are way more enriched and sharing blessings tops off my day! This is a great book for parents with small children, but these practices could begin at any age. Teens love to share their highs and lows.
This book is great for parents and anyone who cares for children or youth. Youth are growing up in a world of violence and what may seem like hopelessnness. This book provides ways to grow in faith as a family. Growing together and getting to truly know one another need not be corny or boring. This book provides easy fun ways and explains the importance of these easy steps. A great gift for Mothers Day, Fathers Day, or a new family. Frankly, it's good for anyone at anytime!
I wish I could have read this book when my kids were little but now I will give it to every expectant mother and father I know in the future to help them practice faith in their family.
I cannot wait to read this book with other families in our congregation so that we can mutually support each other as make changes to how we do faith in our homes.
Melheim combines witty humor with solid research and sound theology to create a usable guide with achievable results. This is a great book for any family seeking to create or strengthen the role of faith practices in their family life. Who would have thought that having a pillow fight right before bed has something to do with faith development? In a day when it's particularly challenging to find ways of encouraging families with teenagers to engage in faith together, Melheim's voice is important. Whatever the make-up of 'family,' this guide is relevant and important.
Full of good humor, super-practical suggestions and all the neuroscience you need to back it up, Rich Melheim's new book is exactly the kind of life-giving resource I'd expect from the man who's been pushing the envelope on how we "do church" for many years. Highly recommended!
