Overview

With the film Holes, Disney brings Louis Sachar's award-winning book to the big screen -- with a rock- and dance-infused soundtrack. Thanks to his pig-stealing great-great-grandfather, Stanley Yelnats's family is cursed, so it's no surprise that young Stanley is erroneously accused of theft and sent to a detention center, where he is forced to dig holes -- and lots of 'em. Good thing he has some energetic music to keep up his momentum! The soundtrack boasts some big-name players, including the techno sounds of Moby's "Honey" and Shaggy's reggae-infused dance beats in "Keep'n It Real." The standout "Dig It" -- which features lines from the movie and a pumping chorus -- comes from the lesser-known D-tent Boys. The North Mississippi All-Stars blend bluegrass, rock, and funk on the foot-stomping "Shake 'em on Down." The film's themes of courage and perseverance surface on Eagle Eye Cherry's slow-boiling rocker "Don't Give Up" and Stephanie Bentley's twang of "I Will Survive": "As long as my dream's alive / I will survive," she sings, as if trying to lift Stanley's spirits. This eclectic disc mirrors the story's adventurous spirit and uplifting message.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Not surprisingly, perhaps, for a kids' movie based on an award-winning book, the soundtrack to Holes features a smart and eclectic mix of pop, hip-hop, blues, electronica, and rock, including Shaggy's "Keep'n It Real," Moby's "Honey," Keb' Mo''s "Just Like You," and not one but two songs by the Eels, "Mighty Fine Blues" and "Eyes Down." The collection keeps a strong emphasis on blues-inspired songs like Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps' "I'm Gonna Be a Wheel Someday," Pepe Deluxe's version of "Everybody Pass Me By," and North Mississippi Allstars' "Shake 'Em on Down," reflecting the gritty, rough-around-the-edges feel of the movie. Other highlights include Eagle-Eye Cherry's "Don't Give Up," Fiction Plane's "If Only," and Dr. John's "Let's Make a Better World" (the soundtrack gets points just for bothering to put someone like Dr. John on an album largely intended for children). As hip as it is fun and listenable, Holes works equally well as a soundtrack and a nicely crafted collection of music, and is just as enjoyable to listen to for kids and parents alike.

Not only was Louis Sachar's book excellent, the movie was also top quality. It portrayed the book quite accurately, which is a rare find for a book-to-movie movie, and was a great pick to see with friends and family. The soundtrack is a terrific collection of music that is fun, modern (and old!), and will get everyone singing along. I recommend it all the way!

This movie was true to the wonderful book. The highlight for me, though, was the music! I love "Dig it" (Go Khleo, go Khleo!) and I also loved "I will survive" and "Eyes Down". I recommend this to any "Holes" fan!

This soundtrack is incredible. i especially love the song Dig It, sung by the D Tent Boys. (Probably because I am obsessed with Shia LeBeouf). But, even if I didn't like him, I would still like this soundtrack.

This soundtrack is just what you'd expect from a great movie and story like Holes. If you've read the book, you'll enjoy the movie, and how true they stayed to the story. My favourite song from the soundtrack has to be If Only, which takes the poem from the story and makes it the chorus of this ballad, and adds storylines into the verses. Dig It is also great! Overall great buy!!

Holes is such a great movie! The characters did a wonderful job. MAx Kasch (Zig-zag), Jake M. Smith (Squid), and Shia LeBEOUF are all really cute. Zero too! But anyways, the book was great and so was the movie. I can't wait to get the soundtrack plus buy the movie when it comes out!

I LOVE the Holes soundtrack!!! It has some really cool songs on it and I think that Max Kasch (zig-zag) is really cute, too!!! If you have seen the movie ( and even if you haven't :)) you NEED this C.D.!!!!!

The music is just like the movie: enjoyable and uplifting. Hilary Duff has less talent than a brick!! Buy this! You'll enjoy it if you have taste. The songs have great messages about never giving up and the trials of suffering and the sweet taste of hard-earned triumph. A wonderful soundtrack!

This album is really good, especially the first song "Dig it". They are so good it makes you wonder why they don't make a band together. Well, if you are thinking of buying it... you REALLY should!!!
