Holiday in Your Heart by Susan Fox

“Fox knows how to strike just enough sway between sweet and bitter, homespun and steamy.” --Publishers Weekly

It’s Christmas in the cozy Western town of Caribou Crossing, the season for homecoming, forgiveness, and—just maybe—the gift of a fresh start…
As the holidays approach, the air is filled with the festive sounds of bells chiming and carolers singing. Maribeth Scott loves Christmas, but she’s pretty sure that after years of waiting, Santa isn’t finally going to gift her with Mr. Right. In fact, the only thing she truly wants for Christmas is a baby to love. At thirty-nine, she’s determined to become a mother and she will make it happen, even if she has to do it on her own.
When Mo Kincaid returns to the rustic town after almost twenty years away, he’s seeking redemption from his checkered past. The last thing on his mind is romance, and he’s certain he doesn’t deserve it. But now there’s irresistible Maribeth, showing him the true spirit of Christmas and winning his heart. For the first time in Mo’s life, the future looks bright. Only one thing stands between them: Maribeth’s deep desire for a child and Mo’s conviction that he’s too flawed to be a father.  Is his world-weary heart ready to take the ultimate leap of faith?

Susan Fox succeeds in closing a well written series with a moving story of redemption and second chances. Mo Kincaid was an young father and husband who became abusive when he drank. He left his family and stayed away for 20 years. He returns looking to reconnect with his son and meets Maribeth Scott. She is a single woman who is happy in her life and because Maribeth is about to 40, she decides to start a family via artificial insemination. Mo likes Maribeth but doesn't think he worth her time. Together they begin to find their happy ending and a wonderful close to a realistic series. I am happy to have read this series and am a big fan of Susan Fox. I was given a free copy for an honest review.

So, this is my first Caribou Crossing book and I really enjoyed it. It’s got that perfect amount of drama, romance, humor and growth. Not having read any of the other stories I didn’t have an opinion of Mo or Maribeth coming into this and I think that helped a bit. From the beginning Mo is honest about what a bad person he was in his youth. But he’s matured a lot and is now a stand-up guy, back in town to try to make amends to his ex and his son. Considering the both of them have had stories, returning readers might find it a little harder time letting him in, but I was drawn to him right away. His honesty about the man he used to be and the way he doesn’t expect anything positive drew me to him. I was rooting for him to finally find a place to call home, someone to love and accept him so that he could finish becoming that better man. I’m not sure what role Maribeth has played before, other than that of a friend. She seems to be pretty comfortable with herself (maybe too comfortable sometimes :) ) but her life hasn’t turned out quite like she expected. Alone and approaching her 40th birthday she’s at the point of taking matters into her own hands when pure luck puts her into Mo’s orbit. While she does a little growing of her own, more importantly she provides the acceptance that Mo needs and helps push him into stepping even further outside of his comfort zone and connecting to the people around him. Helps him dream of something more and find the family that he didn’t know he wanted. She doesn’t try to change him too much, accepting the person he is, but she pushes him to look into himself and want more than he ever thought he deserved. Based on this I may have to go back and check out Fox’s backlist. She’s got a great talent for delivering delightful reads full of friends & family, a little steam and a whole lotta heart, great characters and straightforward, emotion driven stories. Susan Fox brings her Caribou Crossing series to an end with a poignant story of one man looking for redemption and a woman yearning for a family of her own. Maribeth Scott is the owner of the thrift shop in Caribou. Her life is full of wonderful friends, a business she enjoys, and her charitable work but she longs for family. She's given up on finding that one true love but a baby she can still have. If everything goes well at the clinic she should be pregnant by Christmas! Mo Kincaid is back in Caribou after twenty years. In his youth he was wild, reckless, and generally a horrid person. He's back to hopefully make amends to the people he hurt the most and build back relationships he previously destroyed. His first day back is quite eventful. He finds a job, a dog, and meets the lovely Maribeth. There is definite chemistry between these two but knowing what she is looking for Mo is certain he is too damaged to be what Maribeth needs. This story will definitely touch your heart and it was a great way to wrap up this series. I would definitely recommend this series.

This is my first book by this author and the last book this author has written in the Caribou Crossing series. It is the story of Mo Kincaid’s journey back to the place he left his wife and child in hopes of apologizing for his abusive behavior of both of them and also the up and down love story between Mo and Maribeth Scott. Maribeth is nearing 40, has dated for many years without finding “the one” and feels the need to have children with or without a husband. When she is on the verge of artificial insemination 50 year old Mo walks into her life and instant attraction occurs. Maribeth’s vision for the future may not be Mo’s leaving much for the two of them to work out before they can have a happily ever after. For some reason I did not warm up to the two as a couple and easily see them together. I did like Caruso the New Guinea singing dog and had to look the breed up online to learn more about them. Very interesting wild dogs indeed! This was a story of change and redemption and family in a small community. Everyone in the story seemed to be related to or know one another very well. There were many people to keep track of along with their relationships to one another that might or might not have been easier to keep track of if one had read previous books of the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
