Holly Stell [Barnes & Noble Exclusive]

Holly Stell is a 13-year-old Californian with a gift that reaches beyond her years. A singer with a fresh, pure voice that recalls teen stars Charlotte Church and Hayley Westenra, Stell reveals her youthful talent on her first CD, released exclusively through Barnes & Noble. Offering a mixture of lyrical popular songs and familiar classical numbers (Puccini's "O mio babbino caro," Gounod's "Jewel" Song), the disc also features a special guest appearance by Andrea Bocelli on the touching "Go Where Love Goes" and displays Stell's budding songwriting skill on "Annabelle Lee."

For her age, Holly has one of the smoothest, soprano voices you'll ever hear anywhere and to hear her singing with Bocelli is a real treat. If you did not know who you were hearing, you'd shock yourself when you find she is only 13. She reminds you of Hayley Westenra when she was about that age, only better. Keep your eye on the Holly run, as she gets older and gains experience. A must have cd for any collection, whether pop or classical. You will agree - a great voice to be sure.

To the classically trained musician Holly Stell's voice may not seem extraordinarily advanced for her age but nevertheless her voice is still a godsend. In a world where children are learning that to be successful you must belt it out on stage and wait for America to call in a vote, Holly is refreshing. Hopefully, young people out there will here her and cling to the beauty of classical music. I'd buy her c.d. even if she couldn't sing a note just as long as she's not destroying her voice by belting out pop music. The truth is she can sing and she does it beautifully.

Although this is nice in some parts, if you are professionally trained in singing/music, I do not recommend this. Yes, Holly was 12-13 when this CD was recorded, and she has a good voice for her years, but I have known many children that age and younger who are far more advanced but not so lucky as to record a CD!!! Her voice has a breathy quality and, to be honest, I bought the CD to listen to singing not breathing. Also, her voice often sounds strained on the higher notes. To those of you who have commented on her extended range, I believe her top not on the CD is a B three octaves above middle C, which is, in fact, fairly normal for a girl of that age with some vocal training. I will be interested to see how Holly's voice progresses with her age. I just don't see the point in making allowances for her age - this is music we are listening to! If her voice is sub-standard, the CD should not have been recorded, no matter what her age. For example, singer such as Charlotte Church and Hayley Westenra also started off very young, but their singing was, from the beginning, of a very high standard.

Holly's voice is incredible and she has a huge career ahead of her. The music is very well done, with full orchestrations and uplifting performances. Perfect listening after a hard day's work or even working out!

I can't believe the snob factor in some of the reviews. I understand that a few of you may be music majors, or even classically trained singers yourself. My question is, "How were your vocal chops when you were 12 years old?" (which is how old I believe Holly was when she recorded the album!!!) Can't you just be happy to hear the joy and passion in her voice when she sings, even if you don't believe in her incredible talent. Aren't you proud as classical crossover music fans, that she could represent a great role model for little girls who need something more than a provocatively dressed pop star ala Brittney Spears to look up to? The fact that she is as young as she is, and may not have had the best vocal teachers, yet still manages to sound like an angel, should be enough for even the most experienced music major to to give her your blessings along with any constructive criticism you feel you have to give. Maybe you music snobs should look at yourself in the mirror and ask if there may be more than a little jealousy in regards to what this young girl has achieved so far. I had the pleasure to see Holly perform live at a charity event, and I can assure you, she takes your breath away with her stage presence and her voice. p.s. I myself had vocal training at the Royal Academy of Music in England and have been a professional singer for many years.

I mean she began to sing when she is a toddler and she could even sing high and high notes, like Carrie Underwood or kelly Clarkson... She could rank the same as carrie underwood.. Listen to Shade of Blue is the bestest song, also a song that featured w/ an famouse opera singer...

After listening to Forza Dentro Me on her site....i COULD NOT believe a 13-year old girl was singing. At some parts, I thought she was a grown woman singing. I may go out to find the CD but I don't know if I'd personally buy it, but no matter what you'll fall in love with her voice the minute you hear it, that's for sure! Holly Stell has really opened my eyes to music!

i heard Forze Dentro Me on her site and watched the video for Perfect Shades of Blue... i don't nomrally like this kind of music and i was just blown away by her voice. She sounds so mature for her age, and she's so clear and can reach alot of vocal heights. i really reccomend this CD!

I got a copy of this CD early and I must say that Holly Stell is the best young voice out in the music scene. Her poise and grace add to the charm of her songs on this CD. She tops Charlotte Church and all other teenage sopranos I have heard. Buy this CD!

As soon as I heard her sing at Barnes and Noble, bough the CD immediately. Holly Stell has a naturally beautiful voice, although still young and a little too breathy. However, she's only 13! I loved her song choices, my favorite is "Wings of a Dove." I'm looking forward to hearing her develop as she matures. She has a lot of potential!

To anyone considering buying this CD, I first would like to say that if you are a classically trained singer and/or have a good ear for music, stay away from this album. I came across Holly Stell online, and listened to the song on her site, Forza Dentro Me. I thought it was pretty good, so I decided to buy the album. Listening to the rest of the album, I came to a realization that I'm not into her voice. There's no power in her voice and it's very breathy and shirll furhtermore, there are times in her songs where she's flat and doesn't hit her notes right. Personally, I think she hasn't had proper classical training, and has been using her voice more for performance and to promote herself rather than improving her technique. Of course, there are some songs thats she executes pretty well. Forze Dentro Me is one of them, so is Annabelle Lee (I believe she wrote that, so that might be the reason she sings it so well) and Go Where Love Goes.

I am a classical musician and first heard of Holly from the duet with Andrea Bocelli. She performs Go Where Love Goes at a proficient level, but the rest of the CD is horrible. Her lower register is breathy and out of tune. Her upper register is sharp and shrill and her vibrato is poorly developed. She's not bad for a 13 year old, but she really needs to work on her technique. I definitely do not recommend this CD, because you will be quite disappointed. After listening to her CD my ears needed some healing. Try sopranos with correct technique and natural talent like Izzy and Anna Netrebko. There you'll actually be exposed to "Classical" music and hear voices with pleasant tone and timbre.

I really really don't see what all the fuss is about! As a musician and singer myself, it is obvious that her voice is weak in the middle and lower range and piercing and squeaky in the upper! So how did she become famous you may wonder? Well then, let me tell you what is needed for fame: good contacts, good agents, luck, looks and most importantly good technology for manufacturing the voice, although in this case, it clearly hasn't worked!

Her voice is amazing! I can't believe a 13 year old girl can sing such high notes! Her voice is very intresting.

Whether or not you like this CD really depends on how fussy you are over your music. You might not mind the breathy voice she uses in most of her songs while on the other hand it might drive you crazy. You might not notice that she's straining her voice half the time while, conversely, it could be all that you notice. I thought the songs were lovely, which is why I bought the CD. I feel like Holly could be much better with more training and songs more within her range.

I was very dissapointed with this CD. Holly has a breathy, childlike voice- not at all mature or advanced for her age. The only parts of the album that were sung well were the high notes on 'O mio babbino caro' and the Jewel song. Weird, I know. It's frustrating because the original, 'new' songs are pretty and would be enjoyable if they were actually sung and not breathed. Time to get a new voice teacher who can show her how not to let so much air pass through her vocal cords.

She has so much potential, it's amazing. Unfortunately, she needs a better voice teacher or something, because she's clearly not living up to that potential. Her high notes are crystal clear and not at all pushed (unlike Charlotte Church or Hayley Westenra) but for some insane reason everything that sits on or below the staff is breathy and more childish sounding. I don't want to hear her breathe, I want to hear her sing. I sincerley hope she gets a good voice teacher to help her with that, because she could add a lot to the world of classical music. I would have given it 4 stars if it weren't for the breathiness.
