The NLT Mosaic bible is a beautiful themed bible, combining Christian artwork from the world as well as relevant devotionals. What makes this devotional bible unique from other devotional bibles is that high quality full color art and photos are integrated into each devotional theme. The devotionals on thick presentation paper is in the first section of the front of the bible rather than incorporated into the text. This bible is a hybrid between a work of art and a devotional bible. There is a stark contrast between the thich devotional pages in the fron and the tissue thin bible paper in used for the actual bible portion. This is not a study bible, but simply makes a unique devotional bible.
I was very excited to receive a copy of The Mosaic Bible from the folks at Tyndale House, because I had great hopes for this devotional and study Bible. The Mosaic Bible starts with the excellent NLT text, which is good both for private study and public reading. It builds on that good foundation by keeping the study and devotional notes separate from the Biblical text. Instead of breaking up the flow of the text, thus suggesting that they are almost part of it, the notes and meditations are placed in the front of the Bible and then crossreferenced from the text. Of almost equal importance is the variety of materials included. The claim of the preface is that this Bible is intended ". to provide a way to encounter Christ on every continent and in every cenury of Christian history." And it does precisely that. We have readings ranging from the 1 Clement and the Didache to writers of today, and they come from different tradition streams as well as different parts of the world. The obvious approach to this Bible is either liturgical or devotional. Follow the Christian year with this Bible, do the readings, and watch your devotional life grow, or alternatively, use them in church liturgy. With the crossreferences, however, you can choose instead to follow your own plan of reading, and use this Bible as a supplement. The only drawbacks I see are simply inevitable consequences of book design. No study Bible can cover everything. This Bible is devotional. Don't look for technical articles. The print is also relatively small, though not extremely so, which is necessary to keep the volume to a reasonable size. Overall, I give this Bible five out of five stars, and thank Tyndale House for the opportunity to review it.
