I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of this journal which I order for my world traveler son. For Christmas. He is actually leaving the country 5 days before Christmas and I have to ship this across the entire country early enough for him to get it before Christmas. Package tracking is a nice tool. It allowed me to watch my order sit in an Orlando FL UPS depot for two days. It arrived today. The box looks like it got run over. I hoped the journal would be unscathed. No worries. They didn't send me the $49.95 beautiful leather journal that I ordered. They sent me the refill pages for the journal, which was a little dinged up. I have to check the local store refund policy to see if I can take it to the local Barnes & Noble. Where they may or may not carry this journal for the same price. This is the first time I've ordered from Barnes and Noble. It's not looking like a great experience so far.
I have been looking for a refillable journal that took A5 refills. I had looked at several online and kept coming back to this one. I really hate to order something like this online because it is hard to judge the quality without seeing the real thing. On Labor Day, I was able to get to an actual Barnes and Noble store. The first thing I did was go to the journals and find the store display copy. Aside from a few nicks and dings from being handled, I was not disappointed. The online picture does not do this journal justice, nor does the description. I tried to find fault and couldn't. The color is a rich tan. The leather is buttery soft. The stitching is tight and uniform. No loose threads. Very well made! There are pockets on each flap that are great for storing papers and notes. A one page calendar is always handy to have in any journal. The store had one copy that was still in the plastic with no nicks or dings. I grabbed it up after I made sure that Barnes and Noble carried the 6" by 8" refills (they do). I use fountain pens and prefer the r the thicker kraft paper rather than the thinner paper in most popular refills. Overall, this journal is a quality product and a good choice for someone looking for a refillable, larger size journal that is functional and pleasing to the eye. For $50, it is a better buy than most of the comparable journals that I looked at. The only reason this journal did not get a 5 stars was because it does not have a pen loop
