Our 9 year-old daughter is an avid reader. We bought this for her birthday with the intention that it serve as a tactile reminder to look up words that she did not know. We sat with her the first time she used it, and she looked up no fewer than 20 new vocabulary words that she otherwise would have skimmed over/read from context. We were then able to discuss and incorporate those new words. This bookmark serves as an excellent tactile reminder to children to look up new words instead of skimming over them.
I purchased and used this Electronic Dictionary Bookmark for approx. 3 - 4 months now and discovered the following: Pros: very lightweight; easily fits between a book's pages as intended; the single CR2032 lithium battery is still working (even after daily usage); allows the user/reader the ability to select (or hit the "OK" button) of a word within the definition of the word you are looking up to obtain another word's definition; although it provides no audible pronunciation of a word, it does provide an excellent sounding (or pronunciation) guide that I personally (having a hearing deficit) find incredibly helpful - ☺; very helpful for elementary up through high school level grade books; it takes only 1-2 seconds to look up a word; it provides various tenses, adjectives, verbs, nouns of a word along with their spellings; it provides multiple definitions for words having multiple meanings; it has the following buttons - Clear, Up, Down, Left, Right to easily navigate a word's definition on 3 lines; comparatively inexpensive. Cons: of the words I've looked up, only approx. 50% were found, which even includes the hidden words within the definitions of other words; it appears not to include sophisticated words (at the University level), which 1) leads the reader to use a regular paper dictionary and 2) why college level students may want to purchase a more expensive electronic dictionary or just rely on a paper bound dictionary; the screen display is small with only 3 lines of which can only accommodate 2 -3 words at most per line leading you to scroll with the arrow keys often. Pro or con: it fits well inside a book, but it is heavy enough where it can fall out; this book mark is slightly flexible, but it's not too rigid; compared to other electronic gizmos (like TI calculators), the buttons require more force to depress , which is not necessarily bad since after all it resides in between book pages where you would not want buttons to be depressed. Happy reading and best wishes. ☺
This is planned to be a surprise Father's Day for my father, who is an avid reader AND a crossword puzzle junkie. I'll give an update after he receives it (Ihad it shipped to his house) and let everyone know what HE thinks about it!
