Change of Heart: Book Three

Jin Rayne is still growing into his frightening new powers as a nekhene cat and his place as reah of Logan Church's tribe when he learns that a sepat, an honor challenge, has been called. Logan, who has never wanted to do anything but lead his small-town tribe, must travel around the world to Mongolia and fight to become the most powerful leader in the werepanther world.

Logan won't be the only one making the journey. As his mate, Jin must fight with him to honor his commitment to Logan, his culture, and his tribe. But the trial is long, involving a prolonged separation between the two men, and Logan's humanity is at stake. In order to make it through the nightmarish sepat, Jin and Logan must accept their fates, trust each other, and honor the vows between them no matter the cost.

I enjoyed this installment much more than the previous two. It had all kinds of emotions and different interactions between all characters. In the beginning it was kind of dragging there for a bit with the whole discussion of the different official names of the members of a tribe and the laws that applied to them. Don't ask me to be specific because I am certain that my brain went out the window as soon as Jin started speaking about it. It was at this point that I started thinking about stopping altogether. But then it started getting interesting with Jin and his pheromones and I stuck it out. ;o) I am glad I did. Not only because I enjoyed the craziness that Jin's pheromones brought, but because I enjoyed getting to know all the different sides of the secondary characters. They all showed a bit more of themselves than in other books and I enjoyed reading about them. I was intrigued by Yuri and Domin and was glad that these two had developed into even stronger men. They knew what they wanted and went after it. I also loved Crane's grit and his strength. At first he was distraught with what was done to him, but once he healed he was going to live his life as he wished and I admired him for that. I also enjoyed the conflict of the story and the emotions that were brought forwards from that conflict. The longing, the need and the love was overwhelming. I cried right along with Jin for Logan and everything he and his tribe went through. And when he let out his power against the evil reah I was cheering him on to squash her. Yes, I was that involved in the story. And did I mention the chemistry? Oh my, how these characters exuded lust! I enjoyed EACH and EVERY scene. That's all I'm going to say about it. From the tender kisses to the grunts of pleasure it was a treat!!! This was a great addition to the series and I enjoyed it very much.

Honored Vow has to be my favourite of the Change of Heart series books by Mary Calmes. I loved Change of Heart and thought Trusted Bond was even better but she has truly outdone herself with the latest in the Jin and Logan saga! I do feel a need to post a warning though, this book has some very brutal scenes. Mary’s books often have some mix of violence but this one includes skinning, beatings, dismemberment, and near rape. That having been said, the story is so much more than the warning. This book picks up where Trusted Bond ended except in this case Logan is being forced to honour a barbaric tradition where Samels all over the world are hand chosen to fight, destroying the other samels and their yarehas, to take the place of the current (and disgustingly corrupt) Samel-atan. Honored Vow is centered completely around the trials and combat of the tradition, as well as the corruption of the Samel-atan. Crane’s castration at his own fathers hand was devastating! Yuri finally finds love and does ‘some one else’ (nope, not telling who). Oh, and we find out that there is one other Reah alive, though she is NOTHING like Jin –sadly. The bittersweet ending though left me torn between crying with joy and crying with devastation. Let’s just say the family is restructured greatly, though it leaves things open for a whole new set of stories that are intertwined yet self-sufficient. Honored Vow is engaging, fast paced, hot yet sad and terrifying all at the same time. Few authors can pull so many emotions at ones and make it something that you devour in one sitting yet Mary Calmes manages it, again. I truly hope that there will be more books in this series (pleasepleaseplease . . .) If you love shifter/were stories, especially M/M ones, you can do no better than to read the entire Change of Heart series, especially Honored Vow (must read in order).

This third book in the Change of Heart series lived up to, and even exceeded my hopes and expectations. More than ever we see how Jin and Logan are perfect for each other even as their love is tested to the limits in this story.Emotions run deep here, with one trial after another threatening to tear them apart. The action is intense and seems nearly non-stop. I love that about this series. I certainly hope to see more of these two in the future.

I'd fallen in love with Calmes' shape shifting cats, so I was excited to read this latest installment of Jin Rayne's story. However, I never expected her to top the previous books. Not only has she done so, but this may well be the best gay romance I have read all year! Honored Vow was gut-wrenching, exciting, tender, sexy, and truly, astonishingly, romantic. And I was up at 1 am finishing it after telling myself "just a few chapters." In a bid to oust the Semel-Aten, the werepanther priest sets in motion a plan that will draw Jin and Logan into a terrible trial that will bring them to the edge of destruction and put their entire family at risk. This was a darker story than the first two books, but the HEA is all the more cathartic because of it. And, the author throws in several twists and surprises that kept me on the edge of my seat with anticipation and nervous excitement. The book has a lot of character development, especially for secondary characters, and more world-building. There are some very hot sex scenes, but also some scenes that will melt your heart. In short, it was a phenomenal read and one I will read again. This could easily be the conclusion of Jin's story - happily, the author has left room for more to come with some questions unanswered and the fate of some characters in question. I hope she doesn't keep us waiting too long. Highly, and enthusiastically recommended!
