Hook Line and Sinker is based on something called "refutation preaching." It is as old as the Bible and is seen often in the New Testament where Jesus refuted not just what the Jewish leaders believed but also what was written in the scriptures. Christ never denied the truth of the scriptures but only the lopsided emphasis or twisted interpretations placed on it. Over the centuries many more absurd beliefs have emanated from a lack of examination of what is being taught. It is not enough to say our preachers always teach directly from the Bible. A prime example today would be the many ministries that emphasize the giving of money to get God to bless the giver in return. This teaching is both biblical and completely sound but its latter-day emphasis is abhorrent and has become one of the great detractors of the church. Unbelievers use it to reinforce their unwillingness to believe and could hardly be blamed for it. In Hook Line and Sinker many of these overemphasized teachings are carefully scrutinized. Also, many popular sayings, cliches and questionable traditional teachings are fairly examined. The result is that some of these things will be seen as pure error and others will come under the category of pure pablum.
