As a mid-thirties male, I'm am arguably not the target audience for this book.  However, from the moment I picked it up, I was drawn to its pages and finished it in two healthy sized sittings.  Heidi Schulz does an excellent job of weaving a clever plot line, interesting characters, and witty dialogue into a the familiar world of Captain Hook (and Peter Pan I suppose).  The story is for both young and old who enjoy swashbuckling repartee.  I highly recommend this for middle grade readers, and wish I had found this as a kid.  Can't wait for the sequel!

There's a reason this has a starred SLJ review-well, actually several reasons. It's hilariously narrated by a crusty pirate who hurls insults at the reader with laugh-out-loud finesse. The heroine, Captain Hook's daughter, Jocelyn, is chock full of bravery, spunk, and even tenderness at times. And it truly is HER story, even though their are pirates and Neverlanders aplenty. This book is a 100% rollicking good time.

Neverland stories are some of my favorite. The movie Hook, was one of my favorite movies growing up. Hook's Revenge is a great addition to the Neverland saga. I am always on the lookout for new books to share with my students, many have told me how much they are enjoying reading it.

I really enjoyed this spin-off of the familiar Peter Pan story. Jocelyn Hook is a feisty, funny, and strong character. She doesn't fully realize just how strong she is, or what is holding her back from achieving her goal, until the climax. A great book for middle grade kids, as a read-aloud or a read-alone. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

fairies, and her own emotions. Join Jocelyn on a written journey you will never forget.

I'm so glad I read this book. Heidi weaved together the classic Peter Pan/Captain Hook tale we know with one through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old girl, Jocelyn. Yet, it's not her voice we read through--we hear Jocelyn's story through the voice of an anonymous pirate. It was a unique POV that took me a second to catch on to, but by chapter three, I was hooked. (Haha, get it? That pun actually wasn't intended.) The story is very fast-paced, and at one point I did feel a little overwhelmed by all that was happening, but by the time I reached the end, Heidi wrapped up the story so well that I finished it with a smile on my face. I can't wait to read more of Schulz's work!

First, kiss your hand. Second, post this on three different books. Last, look under your pillow. (I don't guarantee this will work.)

What an absolutely delightful book! With biting humor throughout (I kind of want to marry that narrator), a beautifully-imagined Neverland, a terrific feminist twist on the Peter Pan story, and a very cleverly-turned plot, this book is just a gem from start to finish. Highly recommended, and I am hotly anticipating the sequel!

Peter Pan is kind of a jerk, and there’s no one better to let you know why than Jocelyn Hook, the daring (and, let’s admit it, much more kind-hearted) daughter of none other can Captain Hook. Her saga of surviving (and escaping) finishing school, and her quest to avenge her father’s death against the Neverland’s tick-tocking crocodile make up the rollicking adventure, Hook’s Revenge by Heidi Schulz. Schulz has captured all the joy and magic of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan story, and reconfigured Neverland for an all new set of adventures through Jocelyn. Schulz writes with a witty tone, her cantankerous narrator imbuing the story periodically with even more color and humor — as Jocelyn navigates the trials and tribulations of finishing school, pirating, and revenge. There is much to say about Hook’s Revenge, but I’ll start with this: it’s a delightful story, filled with charm and wit, endearing characters, imaginative plot twists, and plenty of humor. Schulz’s charming storm is lovingly enhanced by John Hendrix’s wonderful illustrations — each one filled with action, emotions, life, and all the tiny details that bring moments from the text to life. Hook’s Revenge is simply a delight to read. Funny and charming and magical — everything a book should be.

This book was so much fun! There was a laugh-out-loud scene on almost every page. The narrator's voice was witty and snarky and was the perfect complement to this wonderful new tale from Neverland. The main character, Jocelyn Hook (yes, that's Captain Hook's daughter) was spunky and strong, with enough tenderness to make her absolutely lovable. I can't wait for the second book!
