Most parents of a child recently diagnosed on the autism spectrum will tell you that fear and terror loom large in their minds and hearts. The uncertainty of the child's future - and the ability of parents to manage that journey with their child - sits as a constant undercurrent, diluting the glimmers of hope held by even the most optimistic moms or dads. Perhaps that's why personal stories of struggle and success become such an oasis in the desert of everyday life with autism. They replenish not just the body, but the soul. "Hope for the Autism Spectrum" is the oasis every parent longs to find, the wellspring that nourishes body, mind and spirit at each reading. Sally Kirk, mom of three boys, one who is on the spectrum, offers her story with valiant honesty. She is generous with "if only I'd known" moments, hard-won wisdom that can help other parents avoid the potholes and landmines of all that is the autism spectrum. Kirk's life-altering revelation about her child - that his autism was something more than behavior, or social deficits or sensory challenges, that he was a child who was not physically well - forms the basis for an impressive second half of the book. Addressing the maze of options that come under the heading of "biomedical intervention", Kirk presents very detailed and well-researched information in language any parent will welcome. She explains things like body chemistry, heavy metal overload, toxins, food issues, gut problems, immune system challenges, special diets, and supplementation. She discusses the science in a way that makes sense, and is sensible, augmenting this with a wealth of practical tips. As Kirk puts it, "These pages give you shortcuts to the godsends while steering you clear of the hazards." In the end, what is priceless about the book is the infinite hope it offers to even the most down-trodden parent. Hope exists; Kirk provides a roadmap to find it.
