Are you or is someone you love experiencing depression?

This book offers tangible help, hope, and healing from someone who’s been there and has come out the other side.

In this Bible study companion to Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey through Depression, Dr. Bengtson, a neuropsychologist with over 25 years of experience shares both her clinical expertise and her own personal journey through depression.

I had the honor of helping my friend, Dr. Michelle Bengtson launch her book, Hope Prevails, Insights From A Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression, last year. Dr. Michelle is a clinical neuro-psychologist with over 25 years of experience in diagnosing and treating people with depression and many other things. The thing is, Dr. Michelle fell prey to this horrible disease herself, and during her battle she discovered the missing piece to healing. The thing she discovered was that without God's love and grace we can't find hope, and may never feel like we will be well again.  I was so excited when Dr. Michelle asked me to be a part of another launch team for her brand new Hope Prevails Bible Study! This study can be done alone, or as a companion to the Hope Prevails book.  In going through the book and the study, I have realized that even though I have never really dealt with depression personally, there have been so many times in my life that I have fallen for the lies of the enemy, and could have very easily fallen into darkness. I do, however, have family members that I love with all of my heart who have suffered from depression. This book has taught me how to help them, what to say, and what NOT to say, and how to love them through the hardest time of their lives.  The Bible Study also has playlists of worship and praise music, an RX, and Key Thoughts at the end of every chapter. This book is beautifully written by a beautiful lady! Dr. Michelle is so full of inspiration and kindness! I highly recommend this book to all! Whether you have suffered from depression, believing the lies of the enemy, know someone who has, or have never dealt with depression in any way, I guarantee there is something in this book for you, and you will be blessed!  I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This is 100 percent my honest review!

I suffered one traumatic event after another while in college. I thought I had coped fairly well with those. However, it wasn't until I experienced the greatest blessing in my life (the birth of my twins) that I suddenly realized I hadn't coped well at all with those previous traumatic events. You see, for whatever reason, that postpartum period brought a flood of emotions and events that I wasn't prepared for. All of a sudden, my world started spinning out of control. I sought out help from my OB-GYN, began medical treatment for postpartum depression, and within a few years was able to discontinue the medication. However, I have always known that there has been a lingering shadow, ever-present and ever-ready to take hold of my emotions. As a Christian, I felt the struggle between admitting my weakness and claiming healing once and for all. Then, God led me to Dr. Michelle's book and companion study! What a tremendous relief to truly find someone that has "been there"~ walked a journey so close to the one I've been on, and can offer professional experience to her recommendations for me!! More than anything, I appreciate that she sought to get to the spiritual roots of depression, knowing that unless and until the spiritual roots are found and addressed, the battle with depression will never be won. The Bible study takes the book to an even deeper level, as Dr. Michelle poses chapter questions that take you to the heart of each topic. Similar to the book, she again leads us into conquering the enemy by praising God and lists beautiful praise and worship music at the end of each chapter, too (different songs for each chapter than the book!), which is something I looked forward to at the conclusion of my times of study!! I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone that may be currently walking through a season of depression, anyone that knows and/or loves someone walking through depression, or for anyone that may be in church leadership~ so you may be better equipped to help put this resource into the hands of people who need it.

Quoting Dr. Michelle, 'there were days, weeks, months even, when I wondered if the darkness would ever lift' - encountering depression after the untimely death of my husband through me into a state that I didn't recognize. It was as though I was living in a tunnel. The original book Hope Prevails was a blessing to my thoroughly confused mind. I am so happy to have the new Bible study so that I can reinforce what I have learned. Discovering that a widow's life is just that 'a life' - that you cannot make it go away - brought up issues that I would have never considered. This study provides hope when there doesn't seem to be a clear path ahead. Because it can be done as an individual or with a group it is perfect for today. For the person who has lost a loved one, this is a wonderful, encouraging read.

After reading the first book, Hope Prevails, I was so excited when I heard Dr. Michelle had written a Bible Study. I wanted to go deeper in study using all the insights she had shared in the original book but using so many scriptures to share the depths of the Lord's love for us and how healing can take place step by step. I did an online Bible Study, which was my first, and loved it. Using this book and the online interactive study, I learned so many truths from God's Word and how to apply them to my life and how to help others apply them to their lives. With chapters like You Are Not Alone, Reclaiming Your Peace and God Uses Your Pain, I was refreshed, renewed and healed of emotions from the past I didn't realize I still had. Because Dr. Michelle has walked through depression herself, she understands the pain and suffering that comes. So thankful that she shared her story with us for I know many will be helped and healed!! Oh and the playlist at the end, Wow!! I still listen to the playlist almost daily!!

What an amazing companion to “Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey through Depression”! However, it doesn’t matter if you haven’t previously read “Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey through Depression”. The bible study is a stand-alone book. This thought-provoking book not only helps the reader learn the secrets to overcoming depression, it can also help the reader to be an overcomer in every aspect of life! It is a great resource for individual study or in a group setting. I highly recommend this book.

The Hope Prevails Bible Study will be my go-to resource for dealing with depression, something I have dealt with most of my life. You see, I was raised to believe, "all the women in our family are predisposed to melancholy," and this book clearly banishes that myth. The gentle friendly tone of the book doesn't read like strict doctor's orders, but more like encouragement from a good friend. For the willing, the suggestions in this Bible Study are attainable. Like anything, take the necessary parts you need. Remember each one of is unique and Hope Prevails for all!

Hope Prevails along with the companion Bible study would make a great gift for anyone struggling with depression. The holidays are soon to be upon us and many people get depressed at this time of the year. Dr Bengston not only shares her professional expertise in her books, but her own personal journey and what helped her the most. I read the book and will soon journey through the Bible study gleaning insights, spiritual perspective and practical applications in order not only for myself, but perhaps to help others who won't always ask for help. I believe there are many "silent sufferers" who don't want to risk letting others in out of fear, but perhaps we might learn ways to help by reading and applying what we learn from Dr. Bengston and her journey.

Dr. Michelle Bengtson has done it again. The “Hope Prevails Bible Study” delivers the same great authentic connection, raw insights, and powerful truths that we received from her book “Hope Prevails.” Being in church ministry for many years, and now a lead pastor, not only is this study a great resource for individuals, but it would be highly beneficial to both church and counseling groups. Dr. Michelle Bengtson is not just a neuropsychologist; she is a person who has also experienced the journey from depression to health. Her experiences allow her to uniquely sympathize with people in the midst of depression. The “Hope Prevails Bible Study” combines her experiences and knowledge to infuse strength and hope into anyone who participates in it. — Debbie Kitterman, Dare2Hear Ministry

My favorite part of the bible study thus far is that it engages in so many levels. It appeals to different learning styles and backgrounds by reading, writing and listening to words of encouragement and truth. The relevancy of Dr. Bengston's professional training and coordination of all aspects of treatment reinforces the readers' decision to seek help in the medical community and the church.

Hope Prevails Bible Study is unlike any Bible study I have ever done. It has been so impactful to me and I know a big reason is because has been through depression herself. Therefore, knows exactly what she is talking about. Not to mention that she is a neuropsychologist. I’ve never had a book affect me so deeply to be honest. The questions she has us answer and think about as we go through the book have really opened my eyes and helped me to deal with my depression on a deeper level. I’ve been able to see it in a spiritual aspect and I never have done that before. As an added bonus she gives us a playlist of songs after each chapter and the songs have been amazing. Music gets to me anyway so playing these songs while going through the book has been really helpful too. All in all I give this book 5***** and I’m so grateful for the chance to have been able to read it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who deals with depression or knows someone going through depression. *I was given a copy of this book by the author/publisher and all opinions stated are solely my own*

I am still in the midst of reading through this Bible study, but I felt compelled to go ahead and leave a review. I believe this book is so needed today! There are many who struggle with depression today and I believe that this study along with her original book of the same title can be a great resource for anyone who finds himself/herself in the midst of or heading towards depression. I love that Dr. Michelle does not discount other causes of depressions(chemical, genetic, secondary, and reactionary), but in recognizing those causes she also points out the spiritual element that goes hand in hand with those other causes. The spiritual root of depression cannot be ignored for those wanting to experience true freedom from depression. The approach to healing that is taught in this study is not a simple...pray this and you will be healed... but gives real actionable steps to healing, restoration, and a rediscovery of who you were created to be. Your illness does not in any way define you, "determine your worth, or dictate your destiny, or separate you from God." Dr. Michelle walks you through 12 chapters which include resources to help you along the way at the end of each chapter such as Key thoughts, music playlist suggestions, questions for reflection, and actionable steps. This is a much-needed resource for the individual experiencing depression or those who know someone going through it. I would highly recommend this Bible Study. Note: I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review of this book.

In "Hope Prevails, Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey through Depression", Dr. Bengtson lays out a path through and out of the depression that holds so many of us captive. Having been there herself, she "gets" it! One thing she knows for sure is that it takes work to overcome it, and we must commit ourselves to that work. Now, in the companion "Hope Prevails Bible Study, Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey through Depression", she lends a hand to help us do that work. She leads us through thoughtful questions and the answers found in God's Word so that we can "pick up our beds and walk." We can do it! The Hope Prevails Bible Study can be used by itself, but the book and the Bible Study are so much better together!

In her book Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey through Depression, Dr. Michelle Bengtson shared her insights into depression and its impact on lives based on over 20 years of experience working as a clinical neuropsychologist, treating those who struggle with depression. She wrote not only of her experiences as a doctor in her book, but also as a fellow struggler, as one who knows the depths of depression and its impact upon a life. As she walked with the reader, guiding them through her journey from depression to hope, she shared these same insights and scriptures that set her free with others. Now Dr.Bengtson has written a companion book to Hope Prevails. She has written the Hope Prevails Bible Study to be used as a tool to deepen our study into God’s Word and the hope He offers us individually, in a counseling setting, or in a group setting. Reading the book, Hope Prevails, gave me a better understanding of depression and how it affects a person’s entire being – mind, body, and soul. But it was when I worked through the Hope Prevails Bible Study, taking the time to really look inside my own heart and beliefs that I gained a greater understanding of how deep the spiritual roots of depression truly run. This Bible study helped reveal in my own life awareness that I am not immune to believing many of the lies of the enemy that keep me from truly seeing myself as God sees me. I needed to do the work contained in the pages of the Hope Prevails Bible Study to be set free from strongholds in my life that have held me captive for far too long. I truly believe that the truths from God’s Word that are presented in this Bible study can set you free as well. We all need hope!

One of the aspects of blogging which I love is the way the lives of people intersect. God has brought friends into my life I would not have met otherwise, and along with them, their insight and their books. One of these friends has been Dr. Michelle Bengston. I had the opportunity to review her first book, Hope Prevails, which you can read about here. Michelle is a neuropsychologist who had treated patients for years. Yet only in the midst of her own battle did she discover the missing component in treatment. Being a woman who usually has a Bible Study workbook going, when asked to be a part of this launch team, I was grateful to be included. Hope Prevails Bible Study is a wonderful study for anyone who struggles with depression or has a loved one who struggles. This means it is pretty much for us all. The study brings practical application which will encourage any reader. It is not a cure for depression as medication may be needed and one should always follow the recommendations made by their doctor. But we need to always remember there is a spiritual component of our lives that must be addressed. This study does just that - focuses on our spiritual mindset. Each chapter of this study will guide you in reading Scriptures and responding to questions. There are key thoughts and directives to help maintain a hope filled mindset throughout the day. Dr. Bengston has included a leader's guide making this book a wonderful resource for a group Bible Study. The book is a gentle journey making one realize depression is common and we are not alone in this battle. There are chemical genetic, experiential, and spiritual contributors to this struggle. With the help of professionals and Scriptures, one can fight back from this journey and discover the joy and peace God intends. This is an excellent Bible Study and resource for personal use for those who struggle with depression or have a loved one who struggles. ** I received an advanced reading copy of this book for the purpose of this review in exchange for my honest opinion. It was a privilege to read this book and do so.

Michelle, who is a renowned neuro-psychologist knows first-hand what dealing with depression looks like. Not only does she see it daily in her interactions with her patients but she has also battled with it in her own life. And out of that came the inspiring book “Hope Prevails: Insights From A Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression.” “Hope Prevails is a beautifully written book about what it means to have depression, how we can be healed from it, and who the healing comes from: God. And now a year later Michelle has come out with a companion study book to either go along with “Hope Prevails” or to be done as a stand alone study. One of her statements in the new book says this: “Both faith and fear carry equal weight and both demand our focus. Yet you get to choose which one will reign. Choosing faith over fear or doubt will have profoundly positive results.” Faith in God, and having hope are the two prevailing themes that can help us heal from depression. And Michelle’s new book/study helps us learn how to cultivate both. Her message is beautifully delivered and one that I believe everyone can greatly benefit from.

Dr. Michelle Bengtson , is spreading even more Hope with her new Bible Study. Last Year she launched Hope Prevails in which she shared her own journey through depression and back using her own professional expertise, strong faith and most importantly, the Scriptures. It is encouraging, uplifting, thought provoking and a life changing read. You will find it Easy to read and insightful. This bible study can be used along side the Hope Prevails Book or as a stand alone study. You'll find a playlist at the end if every chapter along with a suggested bible verse to help you break those chains If you or anyone you know anyone is suffering with depression, this is a MUST read. "We have a very real enemy, and our fear of him only enhances is power. He would like us to believe that we are slaves to our past, to our mistakes, to our sin, even our depression. But every fear is based on a lie."

Dr. Michelle Bengston understands that depression has physical, mental, and spiritual roots--and therefore one must use a multifaceted approach to healing. There are plenty of books that talk about the physical and mental roots of depression, with loads of advice for finding relief. Dr. Bengston's new Bible study guide walks the sufferer through actionable steps to seek spiritual healing and renewal as well. If you suffer from depression, or know someone who does, this book is for you. Dr. Bengston uses anecdotes (many from her own journey through depression) to capture the reader's attention, guided reading of scripture, memorization of promises, and play lists of songs to help the reader journey towards a cure (or, as I like to say, the Cure).

Inspirational, encouraging, uplifting and definitely a must read for everyone. This Bible Study can be used in a group setting or by an individual. The author provides Scripture and even a music playlist to accompany this great study. A great book to give as a gift, too.
