Jon Caspar goes back to his hometown as he is healing from wounds received on a Seals mission. He is on loan to Homeland Security. It will be his job to protect their contact in his hometown as she monitors chatter on social networks. They have a history. I enjoyed this story. I enjoyed the characters. There is a lot of action here. Jon and Charlie are good together as they circle each other trying to protect themselves from further hurt. The sparks are still there but they have to rebuild the trust. I look forward to more in this series.

This was a excellent storyline and great characters, but the book ended too quickly. Only half of the plot was exposed, there is a cliffhanger has to what else was going on in the town. It feels like an incomplete story. I have enjoyed reading some of the other books by Ms James much better. Mjw

Hot Combat has such an energetic, intense feeling in it through the story. The action is brutal and cruel and it hits at the most unexpected times. The boisterous passion between Jon and Charlie is reignited as soon as they meet again, yet the feelings between them are deep and rooted. I loved this story. I loved the vitality of it, it was flowing off the pages with such drive I was lost in it, the rest of the world not existing. Jon and Charlie have nurtured the fire between them for years deep in their hearts. Jon is kind, caring, protective, and has tenderness in him that made me swoon. He is wounded, in a crossroads in his life, and the chance meeting with Charlie changes everything. Charlie is tough, capable, independent, and makes things happen. I loved how she took charge and was willing to make compromises and sacrifices if needed when facing the malice and danger. They were so perfect for each other, it was a joy to watch them fumble into love, wishing they would live long enough to have a chance with a future together. I loved how the team was set up, how there wasn't that 'staging' that sometimes comes with the first book of a series. All fell into the place naturally, the team is skillful and competent and I am looking forward getting to know them better. The action they engaged in wasn't only against the homegrown terrorist and angry townfolks, it was also against the elements, nature, and wildlife. It set my heart raising, the danger and death coming right at them with rancor. A perfect mix of suspense and threat, delightful family bonding, and luscious passion and sweet loving. ~ Five Spoons

Great story from Elle James! This story is a great start to a new series. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more. Jon Caspar is a SEAL, but his combat injury has made getting back to work difficult. He finds himself on loan out to a task force taking on those who threaten the security of the USA. The last thing he expected was finding himself back in his hometown and having to face his past. Charlie McClain did everything she could to make a living to support her daughter that included taking on a job working with for a group hunting for threats against the USA online. Finding herself in danger she doesn't know who to trust until in walks someone from her past and with him the realization that they have unfinished business. I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Four and 1/2 Stars! Kudos to author Elle James. She has written a very exciting first story, Hot Combat, in her new series, Ballistic Cowboys. The characters are intriguing and well-developed. The hero, Jon "Ghost" Caspar is a Navy SEAL recuperating from an injury on loan to a Homeland Security Task Force. He is sent back "home" to Grizzly Pass, WY. There he reconnects with his former lover, Charlie McClain and her daughter, Lolly. You will want to read this book to find out how Ghost and Charlie rediscover their love for one another while facing potential terrorists and danger.

4 1/2 STARS! An exciting kick-off to a new series, Ballistic Cowboys, from Elle James! We meet a handful of military guys from various branches who are being pulled in to work on a task force for Homeland Security. Each book will center on a different guy, and to kick it off, we have Ghost's story! The characters are down to earth guys who are serious about their jobs and protecting the innocent. I enjoyed the reunion story for Ghost and seeing him soften when he interacts with her little girl. Navy SEAL Jon "Ghost" Caspar is on temporary assignment with a Homeland Security task force that has brought him back to his hometown of Grizzly Pass, Wyoming for the first time in seven years. He's being sent to protect a single mother and her daughter after some threats have been made on her since she turned in some intel. Charlie McClain never thought she'd see her former lover again after he left town, so when he comes knocking at her door, she's shocked. She's still drawn to him the same as she ever was, but she knows if he hangs around too long, he'll figure out the secret she kept from him. Seeing him interact so sweetly with her young daughter makes her heart melt though, and has her second guessing whether she was in the right with her previous decisions in life. Will he decide she's worth sticking around for this time, or will the end of this mission see him taking off again?

This one had my heart pounding! It’s been a while since I’ve given a Harlequin book 5 stars. I have no prejudice against them, but they usually just don’t grab me much these days – until I read this one. The blurb does a great job of explaining the story so I won’t recap it in this review. Elle James has crafted a heart stopping, secret baby, injured SEAL story that I couldn’t put down. Hot Combat is the first story in a new series – Ballistic Cowboys. The storyline for the main characters is resolved but the mystery is not entirely solved and I can’t wait to read the next one. If you enjoy Harlequin Intrigue stories you won’t want to miss this one. An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
