Hot, Shot, and Bothered (Lilly Hawkins Series #2) by Nora McFarland

TV news photographer Lilly Hawkins is on the biggest assignment of her career. A deadly wildfire is racing through the California mountains toward the town of Elizabeth Lake. After barely slipping in ahead of road closures, Lilly has her hands full photographing the massive evacuation and approaching inferno. She has no time to cover the accidental drowning of a reckless party girl in the lake . . . until she learns the victim’s name.

When Lilly knew her thirteen years ago, Jessica Egan was a principled environmental activist and not a bit reckless or wild. Could she have changed that much, or is a killer exploiting the chaos surrounding the fire to disguise a murder?

Soon Lilly’s juggling the story she should be covering with the story she can’t let go. What could have been the motive for Jessica’s death? Was it sexual jealousy, long-held grudges, or just plain old-fashioned greed that got Jessica killed? Meanwhile, Lily has to contend with her station’s low-budget technology, the antics of her dodgy uncle Bud, and the alarming job offers her boyfriend is fielding from big-city competitors. Lilly is racing against the clock to get answers. If only the murderer—or the fire—doesn’t get her first . . .

Lilly's back! If you missed the first book in the series, A Bad Day's Work, you should check it out. Hot, Shot, and Bothered can stand alone, but it's more fun if you already know the characters. I loved reading about Lilly and her odd assortment of fellow "shooters", her, um.. interesting...Uncle Bud, and the messes she gets herself into. Both books are pretty funny, but Lilly seems to have matured - a little - in the second book, so the tone seemed a little different to me. This is a great mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. I'm looking forward to book #3.

Lilly Hawkins, a videographer for a local television studio to record a wildfire that is raging on the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. While there, she learns that a body of a woman pulled from a lake is a former friend of hers. Intrigued by the death and doing her on investigating, she begins to believe that her friend Jessica's death was no accident. Now she has to deal with being trapped by the fire or by the possible murderer. Hot, Shot and Bothered is witty, energetic and good fun. Lilly is a character that this reader enjoyed getting to know. She is a determined woman who is a little sarcastic. I found the action fast paced and the story flows right to the climax. McFarland has written an entertaining thriller; not to heavy but quite enjoyable. Add this one to your summer reading list.

HOT, SHOT, AND BOTHERED, By Nora McFarland kept me turning each page. I really liked this book. You will meet Lilly Hawkins she is a news camera Woman. She is one smart cookie. She is also ambitious may be a bit too for her own good (in my opinion). The book starts out really hot and by hot I mean wild fire hot. Lilly finds her self wrapping up a day of filming a wildfire in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Then all of a sudden a body is found and then Lilly is on! She is on the hunt for the story she has no clue as to how close she is to the story. Lilly is in an on again off again relationship (who hasn't been there at least once) and has an Uncle Bud who you might find to be an interesting character (you got to love family). I do not want to tell you the whole story because this is a mystery. I will tell you this book will make you laugh. This is the second book in a series and I was able to follow along even though it was read out of order. The author Nora McFarland writes a great mystery. I can't wait to read the first book in the series. I think Lilly was a very likable character. I can not wait to see what new interests he will have in the next book or what situation she will find her self in. I truly want to tell you so much more but I really don't want to ruin the story for you. Get this book it is great. I give it a four star rating because it is very entertaining. I use the one out of five star rating system, one is the worst and five is the best. I have to let you know that I did get this book from Good Reads; however the opinions in this review are my own.

In Bakersfield, KJAY TV news shooter (photographer) Lilly Hawkins is known for her independence as she does not always heed her boss' orders. Currently, she covers the out of control deadly wildfire in the Sierra Madre Mountains. When the divers bring a drowned corpse out of the water, Lily ignores that as she is focused on capturing the inferno. Her interest changes when she learns the drowning victim is Jessica Egan who Lily knew years ago as dedicated environmentalist. Now everyone who knew Jessica thought she was a party girl with a different man every night. Her brother calls Jessica a whore. Lily thinks Jessica was murdered because she could not have dived due to an injured shoulder. Told by her superior to concentrate on the blaze heading to the town of Elizabeth Lake, Lily investigates Jessica's life, but soon finds a link to the blaze and people who will kill again to protect their secrets. This journalistic investigative tale is sharp and scintillating due to intrepid Lily. Her instincts and skills allow her to uncover the truth based on the assumption that the victim was not a loose bimbo. The support cast including the raging wildfire is enablers who turn Lily into a hero or perhaps the second corpse of a bimbo if the culprits have their way. Harriet Klausner
