Natural ornaments aren't always green. Vivid orange and yellow citrus fruits can fill a room with sunshine. Whole cloves are pressed into the skins in a variety of designs; besides lemons and oranges, tangerines, clementines, and kumquats are good for pomanders. Garden writer Elvin McDonald decorated his evergreen wreaths with the promise of spring in the form of ready-to-plant narcissus bulbs. The bulbs are held in place with green string.
Wreathing the Season in Gold
Easy-to-make presents start with gold lame fabric wrapped around the roots of miniature evergreen trees - available at garden centers - and tied with gold cord. The ornaments, which children can help bake, are star-shaped spice cookies, glazed with white sugar icing. The delicious star spangles are hung on the tree with gold ribbon.
