Enjoyed this book very much. I have read all of Mark Mills's books thru the years and look forward to any new ones that he writes. Hope he follows up on this book so we can find out what happens to these characters. Loved the locale and descriptions of the scenery. Thought it was a valuable part of the book. The time between the world wars must have had a tenuous feel to it and the characters portray that very well. I want to know what happens to Tom Nash and hope that he finds happiness after all that has happened to him.

As a suspense novel I felt this was a bit of a light weight. The emphasis seemed to be more on setting the scene than in delivering the action. The setting of the southern coast of France is skillfully described, but plays a bigger part in the book than the plot which is slow to develop, but does finish well. This book was provided for review by the well read folks at Library Thing and Random House.

I have read a lot of this genre of books over the years. This one is better than most, although the plot is pretty simple. The main character thinks he has left his past behind, but it comes back to haunt him. All pretty well used and predictable. I thought there was a chance at some interesting interaction with the determined police inspector, but before we got to anything interesting, a higher power prevailed.

It took a lot of effort to finish this.

Very well written. Good amount of suspense. Nicely woven plot with a good balance among local color, a pre-WII political setting, and action.
