Overview

Think what you will about Paris Hilton getting top billing in the remake of the 1953 cult classic House of Wax, but one of the film's saving graces is a soundtrack packed with hard-rocking contemporary bands. Canada's Stutterfly give emo a twist with the three-part vocals, primal screams, and melodic time changes of "Gun in Hand," and Bloodsimple pump up the volume with thunderous metal riffs throughout "Path to Prevail." Deftones use roiling waves of distortion to goose along the sluggish pace of the otherwise anthemic "Minerva" -- but not everything here is an overtly aggressive maelstrom of howling singers and pile-driven riffs. Case in point: Har Mar Superstar's "Cut Me Up," on which he does his best Prince impersonation via electro-funk synthesizers and a lascivious call-and-response with Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O. Balancing the new cuts are a few underground oldies, including the Stooges' slithery "Dirt" and Joy Division's "New Dawn Fades." The latter, with its morose bass line and Ian Curtis's tortured vocals, sounds about as pained as having to endure Hilton's acting. Although it boasts a wide range of styles, this mix fits hand-in-glove with the dark, haunted theme at the heart of House of Wax.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
House of Wax's soundtrack is pretty adequate for a quickie summer horror picture about the stalking, killing, and eventual waxing of handsome young people. It begins with the stinging beats and mild nihilism of "Spitfire" from the Prodigy's overlooked 2004 effort Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned. My Chemical Romance seem obsessed with death anyway, so their spiky post-hardcore workout "I Never Told You What I Do for a Living" is a perfect fit. And where would a modern-day chiller be without a cut from that lovable ghoul Marilyn Manson? The monger of all that is sinister contributes 1996's NIN-ish "Dried Up, Tied and Dead to the World." House of Wax throws some curveballs alongside standard alt metal fare like Disturbed ("Prayer") and Bloodsimple ("Path to Prevail"). It includes all seven minutes of the Stooges' silty, slow-burn 1970 classic "Dirt," and the punkified new wave of the Von Bondies' "Not That Social" is a great lead-in to Har Mar Superstar and Karen O's crass-hop romp "Cut Me Up." The set also taps Joy Division's dour, intense "New Dawn Fades," but it seems really out of place. Still, House of Wax includes pretty much what you'd expect from the soundtrack to a movie so scary, it stars Paris Hilton.
