About the Author
Russell Martin received his Ph.D. in religion from the University of Toronto. He is interested in understanding the social and political objectives of God's people in the first century as they tried to justify their continuous subjection to pagan foreign powers for more than 600 years. He explains why Jesus was convinced that God would give the Judaeans their freedom by initiating a new era of universal harmony, prosperity, security and happiness. Jesus failed but his ideals of peace, justice and rightness are still worthwhile, even if they must be realistically understood in order to be consistent with contemporary knowledge.
