The New York Times - Sarah Harrison Smith
These whimsical illustrations are detailed enough to reward the kind of "reading" toddlers like to do when they are studying their books alone.
From the Publisher
"Hand-drawn lettering and a limited palette of inky black, sepia, cream and aquamarine give this little book a lot of style. A vehicle of some kind - wagon, rocket, train, plane, bike or car - moves across each spread, described with a nice choice of action verb: "A train click-clacks along a track"; "A rocket roars way up high." A round-eyed boy and girl are accompanied on their travels by a self-possessed cat, a dog in wire-rimmed spectacles and a bird wearing a conductor's cap. These whimsical illustrations are detailed enough to reward the kind of "reading" toddlers like to do when they are studying their books alone." - New York Times

PreS—How fast does a car go? It zooms! In this board book, half a dozen vehicles are depicted moving in their unique ways, with the method and speed of each described in basic terms, such as "A wagon rolls on the sidewalk." The spirit of adventure, happily portrayed on the faces of each individual, is designed to show the joy of travel. This fun book is sure to encourage energetic toddlers to show how fast they can go! Riggs's introductory title offers value in its ability to enrich vocabulary for babies and toddlers in a fun and easy way. The illustrations, comprised of a palette of mauve, taupe, orange, blue, and cream with bold black outlines, are simple but with enough action to create additional dialogue with a child. On each spread, a different vehicle is energetically portrayed, with line art giving a sense of movement. Slower modes of transportation have curly lines trailing behind, while faster vehicles have straight lines, except for the rocket, which has a blast of energy propelling it into a starry realm. Recommended as an additional board book purchase.—Gaye Hinchliff, King County Library System, WA

This simple book about transportation will introduce toddlers to wagons, bicycles, cars, rockets and more. Each page features a hand-lettered sentence introducing a mode of transportation in a simple, yet descriptive way—from "A Wagon rolls on the sidewalk" through "A TRAIN click-clacks along a track" to "A Rocket roars way up high." The digital illustrations—appealingly rendered in a color palette restricted to shades of black, gold and blue—convey a sense of motion and fun. The scenes are populated by a few, varied human characters (all apparently Caucasian), and most incorporate a goofy dog and smug-looking cat tagging along for the ride. The transportation tour ends with a challenge toddlers will readily take up—"How FAST can you go?"—illustrated with a full-out race scene; a girl speeds along on a bike, long hair blowing in the wind and kitty firmly ensconced in her basket, while a boy runs furiously behind her, arms pumping hard, eyes shut in concentration and eager dog at his heels. Combine the simple text—which incorporates apt, interesting vocabulary—with the appealing subject and dynamic illustrations for a guaranteed toddler treat.Great for a transportation-themed storytime or one-on-one sharing.
