How Rude!: The Teenagers' Guide to Good Manners, Proper Behavior, and Not Grossing People Out by Alex J. Packer, Pamela Espeland, Jeff Tolbert

Here's an etiquette book that teens will want to read-because it keeps them laughing, doesn't preach, and deals with issues that matter to them, as teens themselves reported in a nationwide survey. In the tradition of his best-selling BRINGING UP PARENTS, Alex J. Packer blends outrageous humor with sound advice as he guides readers through the mysterious world of manners from A ("Applause") to Z ("Zits"). He starts by explaining why etiquette is important-because people who know how to handle themselves in social situations come out on top, get what they want, feel good about themselves, and enjoy life to the fullest. Fourteen chapters describe the basics of polite behavior in all kinds of situations at home, in school, and in the world. Teens learn how to be a host with the most (and a guest with the best), what to do (and not do) when going online or waiting in line, how to deal with rude relatives, how to act at the mall and the concert hall, how to make introductions, who invented manners, and much more. Hundreds of "Dear Alex" questions and answers cover everything from dating to breaking up, thank-you notes to table manners, ethnic jokes to social cliques, skateboarding to celebrating. Survey results reveal what teens, parents, and teachers think about manners and why they're important. Full of practical tips for every occasion, HOW RUDE!T is a serious etiquette encyclopedia-and a hilarious read. Includes reproducibles for the home and classroom ("50 Commandments of Family Etiquette" and "30 Commandments of Classroom Etiquette.")

This book was checked out of the library, and has since been removed from the school. It has fantastic contents however, if you have certain views on sex, you may not want your child reading it. If you are too chicken to cover the subject this is an alternative. This book should however be two seperate books. The sections on manners and such are so awesome it would be worth cutting out the contents you don't want younger children reading. I myself cover those views and topics myself. You make your judgement with your child.

Parents of Asperger's Syndrome teens and preteens: This is the answer to your prayers! Do you need a way to teach your child the rules for social behaviors? This book covers it all, but best of all the author has a great sense of humor that really reaches kids. I bought it and just left it out-my teen with Asperger's was bringing it to me to share what he was reading. This is as effective as any social skills group we've attended. My neurotypical kid loves it too! Alex J Packer is hilarious, and makes learning manners a riot on every page. Don't rent it, buy it. Your kids will use it for years and years.

My husband bought this book as a present for our daughter last year when he was away on a trip. She does NOT like to read, it is always a problem getting her to read for class, so it was a great surprise to me that she is reading this book and LOVES it! She received it when she was in 6th grade and now it is the end of 7th and she still uses and reads it. Recently her 5th grade brother had reason for her to help him and they went to the book, him stating he wished he had one too! I have read some if it and it gives good advice on how to respond in different difficult situations, with acceptable responses according to my daughter. She states I give dorky advice, she tells her brother don't say what Mom says you will be a wimp etc. The best recommendation I can give is that my 13 year old thinks it is great and the advice from a parents view is appropriate and well mannered, yet acceptable from a teenagers point of view.

I loved this book! I read it from cover to cover! It covers a lot of etiquette issues, but while adding humor at the same time. Also in this book are issues that you normally may not think involve manners: like manners on surfing the net.
