How to Rock Braces and Glasses (How to Rock Series #1) by Meg Haston

Super-stylish and uber-harsh, Kacey Simon is the social dictator of Marquette Middle School. But when an eye infection and a visit to the dentist leave her with Coke-bottle glasses, a mouth full of metal, and...a littthp, Kacey is dismissed by her popular friends, falling so far down the social ladder she can barely see the top, even with her magnifying specs.

With nowhere else to turn, Kacey has to hang with her nerdy neighbor and a boy who walks to beat of his own drum, but she's determined to reclaim her throne. Will she climb back to the top? Or will she discover that hitting rock bottom kind of...rocks?

About the Author

Meg Haston survived braces and glasses in middle school; whether she rocked them is debatable. She did go on to rock other things, including but not limited to slap bracelets, a B.S. in Communication Studies from Northwestern University, and an M.Ed. in Professional Counseling from the University of Georgia.

How to Rock Braces and Glasses is her first novel, with a hardcover sequel, How to Rock Break-Ups and Make-Ups following the paperback of book #1 a month later in October 2012.

Reviewed by Kristie I. for Readers Favorite "How to Rock Glasses and Braces" by Meg Haston is a must-read for middle school girls! Kacey is at the top of the social ladder and world at her middle school. Kacey is the most popular girl, has a perfect life and is in charge until suddenly all that changes. After her visits to the dentist and eye doctor, Kacey arrives at school wearing glasses and braces. Not only has Kacey's physical appearance changed, but her social standing has changed now as well. Finding herself at the bottom of the social ladder, Kacey's life changes as she is making friends with people she would not have associated with before. Kacey learns some good lessons and learns who she really is as a person instead of just focusing on her appearance and her social standing and discovers her life really is not over. What a great book for any middle school girl to read! So many are caught up in having the "right look" and being "queen bee," that it is easy for girls to lose their own identity and forget who they really are as individuals. Kacey is a good role model and someone that girls will enjoy reading about and growing as an individual along with. Kacey will be viewed as a "real girl" dealing with issues that middle school girls struggle with daily. This would be a good book to use in a small group setting or as part of self-esteem or self-awareness group.

First of all, the main character is hard to root for as she is insufferably vain, rude, and selfish. Also, it is insulting to people with glasses and braces because its basically saying tht they are ugly. The ending was pretty well written, but other than that, the book was about a boy crazy, popular girl feeling sorry for herself. If you want a girl who is smart, brave, and can stand up for herself, (unlike Kacey) read Divergent!- SailorPig23

Hi whoever you are (I am assuming a girl), You might not get this in time but if you do happen to check, my advice to you is to not sweat it. People probably won't make fun o you for having braces. It is honestly no big deal. While you walk aroun feeling slightly awkward, remember that gek is chic and hink of the dazzling end result you'll have! I just got my retainer moved from all th time to only at night and let me tell you, the end result of orhodontics is totally worth it. Always. If you got this let me know! From Anna
