Hudson-Mohawk Gateway: An Illustrated History unfolds the dramatic story of the region around Schenectady and Albany, in particular six Gateway municipalities -- Troy, Cohoes, Waterford, Green Island, Colonie, and Watervliet. It provides an overview of the area's architectural, governmental, cultural, and educational heritage, as well as a look at the region today. Thomas Phelan and P. Thomas Carroll, along with Sloane Bullough, Lois M. Feister, Kathleen M. Helfrich, Kimberly A. Klem, Denise Scammell, Peter D. Shaver, Diana S. Waite, and Robert G. Waite, reveal the region's fascinating history. A major manufacturing center since the eighteenth century, Troy is the home of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, one of the world's leading technological universities. Cohoes claims distinction as a nineteenth-century birthplace of cotton manufacturing; the Cohoes Falls have long been considered one of the country's natural wonders. Both Waterford and Green Island served as strategic military campsites during the Revolution, and Watervliet was home to the nation's leading cannon and bell foundries.
More than 400 illustrations, paintings, drawings, and vintage photographs, including a sixteen-page color section, bring the history to life. Biographies of Hudson-Mohawk businesses and organizations are highlighted in a special chapter entitled "Chronicles of Leadership," and an illustrated timeline of significant events further enhances the text.
Hudson-Mohawk Gateway emerges not only as a beautiful collector's volume, but also as an insightful celebration of the area's rich heritage, active present, and very promising future.
