Hunting Hour (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #3) by Margaret Mizushima is a clean K-9 mystery that had a lot of twists and as soon as I thought I figured it out I was wrong. Of course. There was a hint of romance, and that is the way I like it, no sex scenes. Great dogs, a great plot, good characters, and many other side info that makes the story real. I enjoyed it. I was given this story to read and the review is voluntary.

The author has really grown as a writer throughout this series! Each book is better than the last. I can't wait to read the fourth, and Ive heard she's continuing on in the series with a fifth and sixth!

Hunting Hour, the third book in Margaret Mizushima’s Timber Creek K-9 Mystery Series, is her best book so far. In Hunting Hour, Deputy Mattie Cobb and her trusty K-9 partner Robo are back for more adventures in the small town of Timber Creek. When a junior high school student is murdered, Mattie and Robo must work together to help solve the case. Time is of the essence when Cole Walker’s daughter goes missing. The investigation soon ties the murder and kidnapping back to the same person. Mattie and Robo must work together to help bring back Cole’s daughter before it is too late. Tight writing and a great pace along with a twisting plot make Hunting Hour hard to put down. Mizushima has done her homework on the intricacies of a working K-9 and has nailed the partnership between dog and handler better than any book I’ve read. As a K-9 handler, it’s hard to find a read that is so satisfying. This is a must read for mystery fans and animal lovers. I was provided an ARC copy for a fair and honest review.

I enjoy crime fighting and search and rescue teams that include dogs as partners. Having enjoyed James Rollins’ Tucker Wayne series, Katie Ruggle’s Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series and another dynamite duo from Iris Johansen’s Eve Duncan series, I’m thrilled to say Hunting Hour is every bit as good. Margaret’s characters stand out and compliment each other to make the concern for them stronger. Her talent for putting words together makes the mystery deeper. And reading about the human and canine team at work is very powerful. How the author shows me what’s happening instead of telling me is awesome. There’s a scene where Deputy Mattie Cobb and her dog, Robo, are setting out on a search and he is overly excited. She describes how he hover sits. Bam, that hit me. Never thought of putting it that way, but my dog does the same thing. He sits on command but his rear end never quite touches the ground. I’ve seen military and police dogs do it too. It takes patience and trust to control an excited dog with tons of energy to burn. I’d love to see this team in action. She portrays Mattie as strong, owning her flaws and vulnerabilities and trying to deal with them. This makes Mattie good at her job, and it’s going to take everything she has to give to stop a killer. One girl is dead. And now another girl has gone missing, and this one is personal. Loving a good mystery with lots of curve balls thrown at me, the author took me to another level. I never could figure out the motive behind the killings and who was doing them until right near the end. It’s nail biting suspense all the way. This is the third book in the series. Not wanting you to be turned off by that, I’m telling you it doesn’t matter if you haven’t read the other books. You won’t be lost as this is a different case. Sure, there are some things I want to know about. The history between some characters, for one. I’ll be exploring that when I read the other books. If you love a taut mystery loaded with suspense, and enjoy human/canine teams in action, do yourself a favor and grab this one. Or grab any of the others. You just need to have some reading time set aside as you won’t be able to put the book down.

Engaging action in this mystery. Enjoyed the read. Could have more suspects; they seemed stereotypical. Liked the characters especially Robo, Sophie, Angela and Mrs. Gibbs. The main characters, Mattie and Cole were okay; there was too much restating of her past, and quick judgements with Mattie. First time reading author. Would read again. 3 1/2 stars. Voluntarily read ARC for honest review.

I've been wanting to read the books in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series for a while now and when I got the chance to read this book did I go for it. I love reading books about cops or ex-military that has a K-9 as a partner and I was looking forward to seeing how this book would turn out. I have to admit that the book was harder to get into than I thought it would be. For some reason, neither the story nor the characters clicked for me and I struggled with the book. Not that it was a bad book, more like I couldn't find myself completely liking it. Mattie Cobb never came alive for me, and I wasn't interested in her childhood traumas. To have a psychological damaged main female character has become very common, and unless the character in any way comes more than a stereotype then it's pretty hard to muster any energy to like here. And, her "relationship" with Cole Walker also was an aspect that just didn't work for me. And, finding myself quite uninterested in the characters made it harder to enjoy reading the book. Now, the book becomes better towards the end of the book, the story picked up and made my interest grew as I was curious to learn who was behind the killing and later the kidnapping of another young girl. I just want to say one crucial thing about the story, or rather the blurb. It gives away TOO MUCH of the story. I've seen this too often, especially when it comes to thrillers and crime novels. This damages often the enjoyment of reading a book too much. Takes away surprises and to be honest, I will try to avoid books in the future that gives away too much of the story. I don't want to know! Hunting Hour was not a strong book. However, I do want to read the previous two books to see if they will work better for me. 2.5 stars

Total adrenaline rush !! Once you start reading Hunting Hour by Margaret Mizushima you will NOT be able to put the book down. Mizushima's way of telling a story is so energetic and captivating, it will keep you on the edge of your seat !! Her writing keeps you guessing until the very end....she makes you believe or think you know where the story is going and who is going to be the bad guy but then she throws some twists and turns that are completely unexpected. Although this is the third book in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series and the first one that I have read, I was not lost or lacking information at all. A young girl is found murdered and Deputy Mattie Cobb and her dog Robo are called in to follow scents and try to find the murderer. While they are following evidence and interviewing suspects, another young girl goes missing...and this one is personally close to Mattie. As she tries to stay professional and keep her emotions in check, things from the case stir up some family memories that she would like to forget. I have never read a book with a dog playing such a huge role in the story before. It was amazing to read how smart dogs really are and what they are capable of doing if trained in the field. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more in this series!!

~~3.5 stars- A Nice Change of Pace~~ Hunting Hour is the first book I’ve read by this author. I was in the mood for something a bit different from my usual so I dove back into the mystery/law enforcement genre for a little reset. Plus, that cover made it hard for me to pass this title by. Although Hunting Hour is the third book in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series and there are references to characters, crimes, and circumstances from the previous books, it was easy enough to read this title as a standalone. While tragic, the crime detailed in Hunting Hour immediately grabbed my attention. I loved the search dog element and appreciated how accurate those components were. I also liked that the book featured a flawed heroine. The opening sequence provided a glimpse into Mattie’s history that hooked my interest and gave ample opportunity for character growth over the course of the book and series. Unfortunately, I felt like that’s where the book floundered too. Mattie let her own experiences and judgments cloud her views and color her perceptions of secondary characters. While a very honest approach which I initially liked, when it impacted her treatment of others, I struggled with liking her. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the drawn out romance between her and Timber Creek’s vet, Cole Walker. I certainly didn’t anticipate a romance to dominate the book’s plot, but when it’s teased at, I expect that side plot to advance a little more than it did. Although I struggled with the romance side plot and elements of Mattie’s character, I really enjoyed the crime detection portions of the plot. The action scenes moved steadily with a good amount of detail that kept me engaged. I also appreciated the slow reveal of how the players fit into the story and liked there were some twists involved to keep me guessing. Overall, I found Hunting Hour to be different than the usual law enforcement mysteries I read and certainly wouldn’t mind reading more from this author in the future. *ARC received from Netgalley. Timber Creek K-9 Robo is amazing and due some real Lassie worship! This is my first reading of Margaret Mizushima's K-9 mysteries of which "Killing Trail" and "Stalking Ground" are also a part of this series. Had no trouble following Hunting Hour even without first reading the other two. Hunting is what Robo and his handler Mattie Cobb do best as part of the local law enforcement team. Many bumps in the road are hit in this novel whose ball rolls down the hill at an amazing page turning rate. Modern issues of elderly care, teen drug and sex secrets and the need of counseling for life's challenges are all glimpsed. Murder investigation leads into another abduction and tests the skills of Robo and Mattie. Many twists and turns made this a mystery to enjoy along with hints of romance. "A copy of this book was provided to me by Crooked Lane Books and author via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read and my comments here are my honest opinion."

I am new to Margaret Mizushima but I thoroughly enjoyed the highly suspenseful Hunting Hour and will be checking out the earlier books in the series. The main characters were solid, likeable and realistic while the plot was intense and heart touching. I think of the book as police procedural with personality. This book focused on the K9 handler Detective Matty Cobbs and her close friends, the family of the local veterinarian. When one child is killed and another disappears, deep emotional issues haunts Matty's view of the investigation. She is under counseling but it is hard not to relate her the investigation to the abuse she suffered as a child. Luke's wife left him a year earlier and he and his two daughters are still dealing with the fall out. Matty is attached to them but she is afraid that Luke hasn't loves his ex-wife. I requested and received an advanced readers' copy of Hunting Hour. The review is all me, I always review book that I enjoy. I was highly intrigued by the premise and the book met all my expectation. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

STORY-LINE HUNTING HOUR BY MARGARET MIZUSHIMA: In Hunting Hour, author Margaret Mizushima, crafted an intriguing intense suspenseful mystery. Deputy Sheriff Mattie Cobb and Robo, her K9 partner, work in a small town Sheriff Department. In earlier books in the series, Mattie formed a relationship with divorced local vet Cole Walker and his children. Cole does not understand why during the last few months, Mattie pulled away from him and his girls. Unbeknownst to Cole, Mattie began working with a therapist as she tries to sort out her issues stemming from childhood abuse. When Candace Bank's mother reports her missing, Robo and Mattie begin the search at the school which stretches out to Smoker's Hill; a hang out for local teens, where Maggie and Robo find Candace's body. Although only 13 years old and in junior high, Candace had several inappropriate relationships with male teens at the high school. Did one of them kill Candace? When Cole's younger daughter Sophie disappears, Mattie and Robo are back in search mode. Will Mattie and Robo find Sophie before it too late? Who is stalking the children of this small town? My book review of Hunting Hour follows. CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT: While Hunting Hour is a crime thriller, it's also a testament to the versatility of K9 partners, as well as highlighting mental health and family dynamics. With numerous suspects, some with mental health issues, and an officer having mental health issues of her own, Mizushima created a solid suspense tale filled with emotion, as well as, highlighting issues pertinent to today. Mizushima included law enforcement procedures, as well as, handing of a K9 partner. I did not realize how detailed & delicate the balance's between the handler and the dog; nor how the handler must be schooled to not interfering with the dog's ability to work by giving mixed or unnecessary signals, as well as, how the handler prepares the dog to search/track . I found the details Mizushima included fascinating and the law enforcement procedures realistically credible. With plotting, which will hold the reader's attention and with a touch of romance added, I found Hunting Hour thoroughly entertaining. Mizushima's pacing of Hunting Hour flowed smoothly and transitioned from scene to scene fluidly. I could feel the atmosphere of this small close town and its residents. The portrayal of the teens is on target and realistic, as well as, the secondary characters who added depth to the story. Mizushima held the culprit close to her chest; not revealing their identity until the last possible moment. Although a stand alone read, the author included enough background to make me feel comfortable with this book. However, I would suggest the reader start with book 1 to enhance their reading pleasure. I found Hunting Hour a solid suspenseful mystery crime book with intriguing plotting, well-developed characters, and pacing which moved smoothly. Mizushima's writing style, easy to follow and clear, is a joy to read. A clean book without the use of sex or fluff to increase the page count, I would not hesitate to buy this book for my self or a friend. FINALLY, PLEASE NOTE: In addition, I received this book from Netgalley. I chose to voluntarily reviewed this book with an honest book review. Furthermore, book reviews of any novel are dependent on the book/novel review author’s opinion. Consequently, all book/novel reviews on-line and on my blog, are my opinions.
