I began reading this as a book report for my genetics class, not knowing anything about Huntington’s disease. I did not know what it was at all. Also, as a matter of fact that was probably the first time that I have ever heard of the disease. While reading this book I learned so many new things. I learned what the symptoms were, how someone could get Huntington’s disease, and what type of treatments there are. Also, I learned a lot of interesting things about how they can test people to see if they have the disease. I also learned that there are certain ways that parents can genetically test a load of different embryos and choose one that does not have the defective gene that causes Huntington’s disease. I found the symptoms quite interesting as well. Because I knew nothing about Huntington’s disease before reading this book I learned all of the symptoms. I learned that if chromosome 4 is defective than it’ll effect a part of your brain. The part of your brain that it affects is the part that controls all of the nerves in your body. It also affects your brain that could cause mental problems as well, such as depression. I honestly thought that this book was very interesting. The author did a great job with showing a bunch of information on how someone with Huntington’s disease can control the disease and what type of symptoms a patient with Huntington’s disease has. Also, the author went pretty well in depth with how researchers are trying to find a cure for this disease. The author, Johanna Knowles, talks about all of the different types of tests that they have tried out on animals and how it could potentially one day lead to a cure for Huntington’s disease.
