Versus never were a flashy, scene-stealing bunch. They've held the faith that well-turned melodies and clean, finely-wrought guitar leads will get them, if not fame and fortune, the respect of fans more knowledgeable and finicky than most. The band's sound isn't markedly different from the jangly mid-tempo pop of ten years and four albums ago, but it's much richer. Like Yo La Tengo, Versus focus on songcraft with an artisan's care, and the results are more mature and calm while digging deeper to the bone. Every musical element is supertight and intricately woven -- Fontaine Toups' and Richard Baluyut's cool, disaffected vocals take center stage, but only because that's where the melody is, guitars chiming in graceful duets and indulging in fuzz and feedback exercises on the bridge. The light, shambling grooves on "My Adidas," "Play Dead," and "You'll Be Sorry" lift off in the fashion of the Go-Betweens, or "Cath Carroll" period Unrest. Hurrah gently and unobtrusively makes a case for indie-rockers who stood clear while the fortunes of others rose and then crumbled around them. It also makes clear that Versus' musical steadfastness and skills have quietly accumulated over the years.
