Overview

Award Winning Author, Lydia Michaels, enters the world of DARK ROMANCE with an unforgettably suspenseful psychological thriller!

IT'S GOING TO HURT...

Callan MacGregor might speak with the eloquence of a Scottish poet, but a hard life has turned him into a merciless killer. With a first-hand account of hell, he trusts nothing and no one but the hollow hurt tortured into his bones. Sacrificing all, he must escape Scotland to survive.

Emery Tanner is captivated—to the point of obsession—by the stunning Scotsman tending bar at the Imperial Hotel. With as many dark secrets as he has scars, she hungers to know every exquisite inch of him, but her shy nature leaves her tongue-tied. Despite her sense that innate kindness rests beneath his savage surface, Callan MacGregor is a man to approach with caution—if not fear.

When tragedy strikes and Emery’s world is shattered, she learns just how ruthless Callan can be. Violence has shaped his soul and love has always led to loss in both their broken lives. But as secrets are exposed, they find truth within the hurt and awaken a desire to become whole once more.

I enjoy romance. I enjoy a good thriller. When you get both in one book it's a book you should read. Callan. Trying to make sure his sister and brother have a better life, he has to do things that he doesn't want to do, but must. The money is there and love for his siblings, his only family, pushes him forward. The emotional turmoil he goes through as his dreams for a better life slip from his grasp is beautifully and emotionally written. He does what he must to escape his tormentors to bring his most precious possession to America. He is hurt. Emery. Yearning for Callan the man, while working with Callan the bartender, she makes up her mind to let him know what's in her heart. Tragedy strikes Emery in the most intimate way. She feels broken and unworthy. She can no longer picture herself as Callan's woman. She is hurt. Rising from the ashes of one another's dreams, they realize they are stronger together and slowly but surely the Hurt begins to recede, only to reappear in the worst way possible. When a person from Callan's past resolves the Hurt for both of them, only then, can Callan and Emery begin to look to the future. This was a wonderful story. Very dark with lots of explicit violence and depravity, but resolving, to bring hope and love to the characters. Lots of questions remain, and I can't wait to see how Ms. Michaels spins the next story. A stimulating read.

When I saw the cover and the blurb about this book my first thought was “hardcore fighter falls in love with a sweet girl” and yeah...how wrong I was! When I first met Callan I was impressed by the way he look after his siblings and when I continue reading I came to realized that he is more that the fighter, more than the tortured man. He is sweet and so innocent despite the vengeance and the awful life he had. His only goal is to kill everyone that hurted him and his family and he see a lot of bad and cruel things but after all of that he keep his soul intact. Emery is in love with Callan since the moment she met him. She is a sweet girl, shy and doesn’t have many friends or talk to a lot of people, she is looking for her place in the world but she has a very strong heart and she proved that she can take anything and move on, it took her time but she did it. When I saw them together, I remembered my first love in high school. They didn’t know how to talk to each other, how to kiss and touch but they learn and it was beautiful see the relationship grow. I really love this book, is not the same story that I have read a thousand times. It has a very dark moments but also the sweetest. Most of the time I was so tense and nervous because I didn’t know what it was going to happen next, it was a Roller Coaster. I can’t wait to read the rest of the serie. Congratulations Lydia, you are awesome!

When Lydia Michaels announced she was writing a dark romance, I was immediately intrigued. Heeding her cautionary trigger warnings, I trusted her to entertain me with a story that is outside my normal realm of reviewing. It took me a week to work up the nerve to read the arc, but once I started I found myself captivated by Callan and Emery's stories. This book is NOT for the faint of heart and the content warnings were appropriate. The H/h individual stories are full of pain and suffering, and I found myself choking back tears on more than one occasion. My insides hurt, my shoulders were stiff, and I felt gut-wrenching heartbreak. There were a few times I closed the book, thinking to myself, "That's it. I have to tap out now." Ultimately, I was drawn back in each time by the need to know that Callan and Emery get a happy ending. And they did. Lydia Michaels is a superb storyteller and convinced me that despite all of the terror and trauma they'd endured, this couple found peace with one another. In spite of some really tough moments where I found myself uncomfortable reading certain scenes within the book, I absolutely trust this author enough to look forward to book two in the series. I'm really hoping it'll be Innis' story. *Personal notes: *I honestly struggle with rating this a 4 star book. The storytelling was compelling on nearly every level. The deciding factor for me came down to a few statistical information dumps that were just overwhelming enough to pull me out of the story, and an issue with the disappearing/reappearing Scottish accent towards the end of the book. *CW: violence, torture, rape, sexual abuse

Lydia Michaels has done it again - this is such a powerful book, with backstories and the descriptions, I felt like I knew the characters and I was actually in the book living it right along with them. All the feels with the tragedies that Callan went through as a child, then to lose his family when he was older - that right there was heart wrenching; but the pain he endured seeking revenge, holy crap the story was amazing. Then there is the added bonus of Emery, who is attacked - Callan had met her a couple of years earlier, after he left Scotland and come to America. They have lusted after each other from afar - they've talked, sort of - but he is there when she needs him - and they never let go. i was so angry for both characters and what they went through in this book. It was nice, it was harsh, it was eye-popping, it was tender and loving, it was shocking. I wanted revenge, I wanted the perpetrators to HURT. The HEA is so well deserved for them both - and how they get there is a gift of a storyline.

Love can drive you. Love can destroy you. Love can save you. Lydia Michaels can tell a story, even a horrific one, like no other. For Callan and Emery this is a dark, violent, and tearful journey, filled with vengeance and tons of cruelty and Hurt but also hope, on their way toward healing, trust, and Love. So many emotions while reading, and I wanted to get to the end, but I also didn't want to. You will love Callan and Emery, so enjoy this intense read, but be warned – there are parts that will Hurt. Definitely for mature readers only. I received an ARC and wrote my honest review voluntarily.

This is my first book by Lydia Michaels and boy what a completely mesmerizing introduction it is. This is one gripping story that has you feeling the pain and suffering of the characters throughout the story. This is one story that isn’t to be missed. It is extremely well written and beautifully told. Yes, it has darkness but it also has beauty in it as well. It a fantastic piece of writing that spoke to me and drew out the wonders of Ms Michaels mind and intriguing imagination. It speaks truth about our world and how we as people act. It has you wishing for a better life for our characters but the beauty in their souls is so captivating. It is a must read and definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Wow!! What a emotional sad messed up story that ended up with a happy ending. That book destroyed me in every way possible but it was so worth it. This book was beautifully dark and intense but worth it in the long run. It is a MUST READ!

This book is completely different than anything I’ve read...it made me cry, cringe, and gave me chills...how Callan keeps going after everything he’s been through made me fall in love with him.. how he cares for Emery from afar and then eventually up close is amazing...I love how strong Emery is even after everything that happens to her and how she helps Callan work through his demons...it’s definitely a dark read but truly amazing!!!!!

Every single time I finish a Lydia Michaels book I think no way can she top this. And every single time I’m wrong! I thought Hurt was phenomenal! The writing was superb. Every word struck a chord. Every sentence was chilling. It left an impression even long after I finished the book. The storyline was haunting. It had my heart pounding and blood pumping with each turn of the page. I loved both Callan and Emery. What incredible people they are. Brave and loyal. Strong and vulnerable. With spirits that are unbreakable. When they love they love with their whole heart and being. Their journey and their stories are heartbreaking and gut wrenching. A love story wrought with pain, sadness and blood. But the author always leaves the door of hope open and a light at the end of the very dark tunnel. A must read for fans of dark gritty books.

I'd not heard of Lydia Michaels before but kept seeing this book and raves from others and something told me I didn't want to miss this one. So when I was offered an ARC I jumped at the chance and I'm so glad I did. This. This book right here will literally take your breath away. Her story is raw, gritty, powerful, chivalrous, loyal, devoted and loving in it's truths. That's the impact of her story. And her characters are so beautifully flawed while they weave their tale around you until you're there. I mean, right there. I will say, if you're easily triggered read the warning. But this was beautifully written, shared and I feel honored to have been able to read this.
