Overview

Hymns

First Lady of Gospel Shirley Caesar brings her message of peace and encouragement to the world with yet another superlative release. With ten Grammys to her name and a career spanning nearly four decades, Pastor Caesar has certainly earned her title. It's especially appropriate on Hymns, which brings Caesar's passionate performance to such familiar fare as "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "There Is Power in the Blood." Backed by an effusive choir dubbed the Caesar Singers, this is a full-throttle release of traditional gospel and powerful blues. One of the album's most forceful moments, however, comes from its only non-hymn, the in-your-face "How Long Has It Been (Since You've Been Home)," a song written by gospel legend Sullivan Pugh. Bishop T. D. Jakes, a bestselling recording artist in his own right, offers a foreword to this collection, and Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child duets on "Steal Away to Jesus." With this much star power, Hymns is definitely another keeper.
