About the Author

Like most authors, Carol Van Atta is no stranger to the written word. She penned a short novel at age 12 (somewhat frightening illustrations included) and had a creative writing piece published in her high school newspaper. Devouring books from numerous genres, she developed a deep thirst for more reading materials, and could almost always be found with her nose in a book.
She has contributed to several, popular inspirational anthologies and devotional books, and lives in the rainy wetlands of Oregon with her terrifying teens and a small zoo of animals. She is taking an undetermined hiatus away from inspirational writing to delve into her darker side. It's been rumored this genre-jumping occurred after Carol discovered two suspicious red marks on her neck, and experienced an unquenchable urge to howl at the moon.

I kissed a girl and I liked it... ok so I keep singing this song because of the title, but let me just say that this story is nothing like that! I've found another werewolf book to drool over!! I had seen this title a few times and had put it on my TBR want list, so when the tour came up I had to jump on it! It's a very unique tale because there really is so many cool parts going on! You like paranormal romance, it's there, You like mystery, it's there, you like action, it's there, you like a little fantasy, there's some seriously cool creatures coming into play! And the turn about of "bitten" versus "pure blood" werewolves is just fascinating. ok, I'm gunna get a little nuts with Chloe. I do like her, but I keep thinking if she was my friend I'd have slapped her several times. First, I like her for her fan-flipping-tastic sarcasm! She has had some of the best lines ever!! I like her because she is trying to be brave and not always be the victim. I understand growing up with a "gift" makes life hard. But dude, when the bad guys come knocking and someone tells you to stay hidden in the closet, STAY HIDDEN IN THE CLOSET!! And seriously, her impatience has almost gotten her killed like 5 times. And the almost love triangle... But anywho, other than maybe just being slightly bad decision making, Chloe is definitely a very fun character and I thoroughly enjoyed her! Zane is down right HAWT!! Hell, so are all the werewolves :) even the vampers are gorgeous, but short of Alciun, these vampers just creep me out and make me want to carry stakes made out of my trees twigs! I will say two things about Zane, even if he has good intentions, trying to protect the girl while lying to her is BAD DOG!! He took multiple tries to learn this lesson! And secondly, I'm Cajun so if be EVER want to come cook for me, I'll return the favor, and some! :) I am Completely mesmerized by all the twists and turns! I was glued to each page trying to figure out who was on who's side and where the bad guys would pop out from and if Zane and Chloe would ever finally get an uninterrupted moment!! :) I loved this story and I absolutely cannot wait for much much more!! I definitely plan on reading more of this series! I will say, 5 WOLFY GORGEOUS HEARTSTOPPING PAWS from me! :) Now pretty please gimme some mo'!!

This was a very well lengthy book. It didn't leave you half way through the action and say hey now you buy book 2. Instead it finished perfectly and still ended on a new challenge and a cliffhanger. Good job.

I received this book for free for my honest review. I won She kissed a vampire on goodreads first reads and kindly Carol Van Atta gifted me both books when I asked if I could read & review book 1. I loved this book! Chloe Carpenter seems like an average girl working at a wildlife park. She isn't a supernatural being but due to a childhood accident she recovered and now can talk to animals. Now Luke her boss hires a new vet for the wildlife without Chloe knowing and the handsome vet Zane is getting to her. She hates it at first but Zane ends up saving her more than once the first week of knowing each other and then things heat up between them in more way than one. Zane is a sexy alpha male werewolf. If you love vampires, werewolves, magic and paranormal books you'll love this book. Check it out to find out what happens, you won't regret it.Thanks again for letting me read & review. I will be reviewing book two as soon as I'm done with it have like 20 pages left and loving it as well :)

I had a review all written, but as I was rereading it, I kept changing things and I finally just threw it out and started over. It was too serious for such an exciting and fun story. Chloe’s near death and seven month coma have left her with the ability to hear and see animals thoughts. She uses this to her advantage working at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park and her ability is often sought. A new veterinarian, Zane, comes along and her vows of celibacy are in danger. This aplha male calls out to her inner self, jumbling her thoughts and weakening her resolve. She’s angered, afraid, and electrified by him all at the same time, which leads to some fun sparks between these two. There’s a serious part. Young men are being murdered. First, there’s two. Then a third. And a fourth, and the last two Chloe knew. There’s a dark side. Who’s killing these young men? The vamps, fae, or evil werewolves? All seem to have their own agendas and all are suspect. Then there’s the fun, exciting part. The romantic sparks between Chloe and Zane. Chloe’s ability to read minds was limited to just animals. As she honed her skills, she wondered if she’d eventually be able to do the same with humans. She found she could capture Zane’s thoughts, with good reason, and cheated to use this to her advantage. The dialogue between these two kept me smiling as they sparred and came together. They go together like butter and popcorn. Not complete without the other. And we can’t forget the villains. There’s a mysterious figure that attacks a zebra, sucking it’s blood. Hmm.. And the mutants, werewolves that are turned not born one. I wouldn’t recommend trying to pet one. And then there’s Jazmine. Cold as ice and sharpening her claws. She’s not liking Chloe and Zane’s budding romance at all. He’s supposed to be her mate. I enjoy a good mystery and romance. Add in the supernatural elements and I’m wanting to cheat, skip ahead to see if what I wanted to happen did and who the killer was. But I didn’t. And the wait was worth it.

I Kissed a Dog (Werewolves of the West #1) by Carol Van Atta On Chloe Carpenter’s fifteenth Birthday, she was attached by a dog and knocked into a pool, nearly drowning her.  The ordeal left her comatose for seven months.  Upon her unexpected recovery, she gained an ability to communicate with animals and a fear of dogs. As an adult, she utilizes her gift by working at Plum Beach Wildlife Park.  It is there she meets the new veterinarian, Zane Marshall. Oddly, she can hear his thoughts, and she soon discovers that he is not human.  To top things off, there is a serial killer on the loose and Chloe is enlisted to help in the investigation.   I really enjoyed I Kissed a Dog.  The story was original and fast moving.  I enjoyed the plot; it was mysterious with lots of twists.   Carol Van Atta did a good job with keeping you guessing the individual’s allegiances.  The characters were numerous and differentiated.  I like Chloe’s talent for being able to talk to animals.  If I could pick a super power that would be it. I really like Zane Marshall.  I enjoyed Chloe and Zane’s love/hate relationship.  Without giving specifics to avoid a spoiler, but you might want to skip the rest of this paragraph if you haven’t read the book: I was disappointed by Zane’s action in Las Vegas.   What he did troubled me.  Chloe had every reason to be upset with him.  I was happy when he was redeemed later in the novel.  Not that Chloe’s actions were any better, but I honestly believe she was enthralled by the vampire and had no choice in the matter. I Kissed a Dog ends in a cliff hanger that will leave you on the edge on your seat.  It definitely left made me wanting to read the sequel, I Kissed a Vampire, to see what happens next.     ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

This book is about a woman, Chloe Carpenter, falling in love and coming to grips with the supernatural realities and conflicts that come with the new romance. The characters are real to life, which is both a plus and a minus as sometimes they can get annoying and opinions on actions differ, but that is life after all. There were a number of typos; however, I was reading an advanced copy. Therefore, these should be more or less ironed out by final printing. The ending while entertaining, left the reader in cliffhanger status for the next book. While there is nothing wrong with that, and it would help tie up other loose ends from earlier in the book, it did feel a bit abrupt. Overall, the writing produces evocative characters and vivid scenes. The reader is able to enter various situations as if tagging alongside Chloe. There is a definite want for a happy ending for the protagonists of this tale.

I knew from page one I was going to like Chloe Carpenter. Funny, witty, and smart, she makes a great lead. After a life-threatening accident as a teenager leaves her with the strange ability to be able to communicate with animals, Chloe takes a job caring for animals at a wildlife park. Chloe is the type of girl who knows what she wants…at least she thinks she does. The day oh-so-sexy Zane shows up as the park's new vet, Chloe's world is turned upside down. With Zane's arrival strange things also begin to happen, and Chloe begins to question everything she's ever thought she knew. The characters in this story were great. Besides Chloe, we have the sexy werewolf, Zane. Zane is your typical alpha male – always saving Chloe from disaster and causing her to blush just with a look. The chemistry between the two is hot, and their banter is a lot of fun. The book had me laughing the whole way through. As for the rest of the characters, there was a great mix of supernaturals, both good and bad. The good guys were great, and the bad guys were deliciously wicked.

I wasn't sure about this book. I mean, it's about werewolves and fantasy, which is a surefire way to gain my attention, but the cover really didn't appeal to me and I wasn't so sure about the plot. But the beginning definitely caught my attention and it remained caught from there. Chloe is an independent and bull-headed woman who can sometimes have crazy outbursts that make no sense. But she's strong and tries to help in any way possible. Sometimes I felt like Chloe would make a scene out of nothing, especially in one occasion when Zane tried to pay the bill and Chloe went off on a rant about how he thought her incapable of paying and whatnot. I really, really wanted to slap her in the face and tell her that she was being irrational, especially when Zane was only trying to help and be nice. Zane is an alpha male type, and he's a sexy one at that. It's obvious that he likes Chloe and tries to protect her, though that doesn't always work out well. The writing style of the author was a bit strange, and sometimes threw me off. There were flashbacks in the middle of a rant and it cut off my train of thought. There were pauses in the writing and sentence structure wasn't the best. It was a little confusing and would make me pause, but the plot of the story (and my curiosity of what was going to happen) kept me going. There were some things in the story where I felt like things occurred too quickly or too abruptly, but it wasn't much and it went with the story. And the cliffhanger. What a cliffhanger! It definitely left me curious about what was going to happen in the next book in the series! I recommend this book to people who like fantasy and werewolves, and lots and lots of drama.

From the start Chloe and Zane's chemistry is explosive. Chloe instantly finds Zane attractive and overpowering, and decides she does not like him, not one bit. Having to work closely together and occupy the same spaces, really is intense for both characters. The more that they work together, the more they come to like each other, even when they are fighting like cats and dogs! Zane is a swoon worthy Alpha male and he usually gets what he wants, and he wants Chloe. Will Chloe let down her defense and let him in? Can the two learn to work together in life and in love? Carol Van Atta has a natural grace when it comes to storytelling. As you read you feel comfortable with the flow of the story, the characters, and the story line. I Kissed a Dog was a unique look into an already overflowing genre. The way she interweaves myths and legends, as well as some new ideas, into the story not only enlighten the reader, it is done in such a way that it is not drawn out and boring. I Kissed a Dog is a vibrant story full of humor, drama, mystery, and swoon worthy romance.

I Loved it! I was wrapped up in this story from the moment I started reading it until I finished it moments ago. I could only walk away from it when I had no other choice. Before I get into the reasons that I loved it, let me say that the name of the book, I Kissed a Dog, had my attention from the moment I heard it. I knew that I had to read it! Also what about the cover? Awesome isn't it. Okay that said, shall I count the ways I love this story? 1. This was a paranormal romance with the main focus on werewolves although there were vampires and other creatures. Need I mention that this is my favorite type of book and werewolves are my favorite type of supernatural creatures? 2. The characters. They were relateable which is always a plus in my book. Carol had every type of character from the mean spirited girls that we love to hate, to the creepy character that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering if they are friend or foe. The main character Chloe, was easy to like and root on. I had a weakness for the Alpha males. Zane and his merry men had that protective, dominating thing going for them! ;-) 3. The plot. This book had all of my favorite things. There were supernatural beings, romance, suspense, action, and intrigue. 4. The writing. The words flowed together seamlessly. It was easy to understand and the chapters were nicely spaced, not too long or short. There were a few typos but I easily overlooked them because I was so engrossed in the story. 5. The story. Chloe fights her attraction to Zane but circumstances demand that they spend more time together and a girl can only resist for so long. Everytime I thought I knew what was coming, a new twist would happen and I was left wondering again. It was awesome! There was a never ending supply of new circumstances and characters to decipher. It is impossible to get bored while reading this book. :D I thought everything about this book was outstanding. I whole heartedly urge all paranormal romance readers to add this to your TBR list. Trust me, you don't want to miss this one! I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. It was awesome!

Ok. I must say that I love this book’s title. It is the most descriptive title imaginable. It is also straight, to the point, and very catching. I would have read this book just based on that. Of course, the book itself was awesome too. This book is so easy to read. There is a natural flow to the writing. Nothing is forced or dumbed down. It flows naturally, the way that one would speak. It is also very detailed. Every little piece of information is there without every breaking the flow of the story. As a reader, you never have to stop and think about what’s going on. Van Atta works every little tidbit of back-story, description, and narrative into the storyline without stopping the action. I especially enjoyed the lesson on the history of paranormal species. Since it was one character giving it to another there was no dead point in the narrative. The characters in this are brilliant. They were all unique and fit completely within the species that they were to portray. The main character referring to men as a different species cracked me up more than once. It was little descriptions like this fit throughout the novel that helped develop the characters and their personality more than any long description could have. The groupings of characters in the various alliances was quite unique. Van Atta avoided the stereotype of grouping like species together. Alliances were based on the beliefs held by individual characters, and were also muddy at times. She also separated individuals into separate species when they are stereotypically grouped together into one species. New paranormal species were also presented in this novel to round out the characters. This was done brilliantly and in the same manner as the rest of Van Atta’s storytelling, little bits were provided here and there. The love triangle present in this novel also spans species. It adds a great deal of spice to the novel while also providing details as to the powers possessed by each individual. As a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I read it in one sitting, always wanting to know more. I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel. If this novel is any indication, it will be absolutely brilliant.

Wow, this book really got me hooked. The characters are likable, right away. Chloe , the heroine is awesome, and a different type of heroine we usually see. I liked her right away. She has this amazing unique gift that enables her to talk to animals, and understand their thoughts. Which is great, because the alpha male Zane, who is all that is hotness, is a werewolf, so they can do this mind-messaging as they like to call it. Its pretty cool. This book was one of the most entertaining, thrilling and mysterious reads. We don’t only have werewolves, we have sexy vampires, fae, evil werewolves and the mutants as well. Chloe’s abilities find her right smack in the middle of a supernatural chaos taking place between a number of paranormal beings. Chloe has her hands pretty full between the sexy, rugged and very protective werewolf Zane, and the seductive and allusive vampire Valamir. I really enjoyed this supernatural world the author created. It felt right, and I love that is all takes place so close to home for me. The wildlife safari she works at is on the Oregon coast, and I live in the mountains in Washington, and have been to many places up and down the coast. I found that to be fun for me, mentions of common places made it more real for me. If you like the paranormal books like me, then grab this one, its amazing, and not like any others out there. It has its own unique great story. 5 big stars out of 5 for me, wish I could give it 10, but rating everyone does not go that high, lol I was provided a copy of this book from the author for my honest review, for the book tour.

Synopsis Chloe has the gift to mentally talk to animals and, it turns out, werewolves. Following a series of brutal murders, she is pulled into a paranormal world that she knows nothing about and asked to help solve the crimes. Along with the pack beta and his friends, she races against time to figure out who is killing innocent humans. Review I was so excited to read this book because I loved the title. I had hoped that the book would be humorous, but sadly the tone of the book didn't quite live up to the title. I don't know. I liked the story, it just felt like it went the wrong direction to me. The story almost felt like two different stories squished together. I really enjoyed the first half of the book, but it somehow lost me about half way through. The incorporation of Chloe's gift into her everyday life was interesting, and I felt that her relationship with Luke should have been explored more. Instead, she was sudden whisked into this crazy paranormal word and the plot was just inundated with ideas. Then there was the complication of Valimir, a vampire; I almost felt like it was thrown in there as the required love triangle as opposed to really belonging in the story. The plot was coherent, and had an interesting cast of characters. Chloe was a bit odd. I didn't love her, but I didn't hate her either. The book was clearly written and read pretty easily. Overall, it was an enjoyable read, but I'm not quite sure if I will read the sequel. My Recommendation While sometimes a bit grisly, this is a safe paranormal novel for most readers (there are a few sexy parts, but nothing compared to the romance end of the paranormal genre). I give it 3/5. ***FTC Disclosure: This book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review, no other compensation was given, all opinions are my own***

I won this book in a giveaway. This was really good. I enjoyed everything about it. The action, mystery, suspense and of course the heat. Chloe is a ball of snarky spitfire and you can't help but love her. She has a pretty unique ability and it lands her in a wild mystery and serious trouble. Not to mention Zane! There's so much to be said about Zane and most of it is deliciously good. I was surprised by the twist at the end, wasn't really ready for that surprise. I am a huge fan of this series! I really can't wait to read the next book!

Exciting New Paranormal Read!! For me, I Kissed a Dog is one of the most thrilling, entertaining, and mysterious reads of 2012! From beginning to end, I couldn't get enough of this story. Atta takes us into the life of Chloe Carpenter-a beautiful, smart woman that is talented in more ways than one. And although a bit stubborn and strong willed, underneath the outgoing, witty exterior, she is real, shares the same fears as any regular person, and struggles with figuring out who she is and what she wants. Chloe's abilities land her smack dab in the middle of supernatural chaos taking place between a number of paranormal beings. Between the sexy, rugged, protective werewolf Zane, and the seductive, allusive vampire Valamir, Chloe has her hands more than full. But her man worries are only the beginning of her problems as she finds herself entangled in more than she bargained for when a mystery begins to unfold. A plot thick with many layers, a ton of enticing characters that you can't help but love, and alpha males galore(literally and figuratively), I Kissed a Dog is a novel you should put on your must read list! 5 stars! And that's only because the scale doesn't go any farther on amazon! I couldn't put it down!

Chloe Carpenter has had an unique ability since an accident left her in a coma for six months. She can communicate with animals which makes her job at Plum Beach Wildlife Park ideal. She love interacting with the animals on a daily basis. When Luke, the Director of Plum Beach Wildlife Park and secret crush, tells Chloe that he hired Dr. Zane Marshall as Park's vet. Chloe is stunned by this news. She thought that she'd help Luke pick out the new vet for the Park. Dr. Zane Marshall is a dangerously sexy man with a few hidden talents and secrets that intrigue Chloe and the rest of the female staff at the Park. Zane knows about Chloe's unique talent and his hoping that she will show him how is works. Zane is a member of the Pacific Pack and Beta wolf to Logan Sanders. Someone is killing young men between the ages of 18 to 30 in brutal fashion leaving the police baffled. A woman with red hair has been seen in the company of these men but no clue as to who she is yet. Jazmine is suppose to become Zane's mate at the next full moon unless he can find his true and chosen mate. Upon meeting Jazmine, Chloe doesn't like her at all and the feeling is mutual and thensome. Alcuin, a vampire, helps Zane and company teleport to a special meeting with the Elders. Another vampire named Valamir wants Chloe to be his mate inspite of her loving Zane. Valamir tempts Chloe in ways that make her feel that she has to lie to Zane about what is going on. Zane and Chloe suddenly get married as a means of protection for Chloe but upsets a few people namely Luke and her parents. Zane wants Chloe to be his true mate by accepting his mating mark. Who is killing young men in Plum Beach? What is Jazmine really after? Who is the red haired woman? Will Chloe be tempted by Valamir? Will Chloe admit her true feelings about Zane? Will Chloe accept Zane's mating mark? Your answers await you in I Kissed a Dog. I love the uniqueness of the werewolf lore presented in this book! I've read alot of shifter and supernatural books. Yet this unique twist get it an advantage over other paranormal books out there. Chloe feels like a freak sometimes for her ability yet she's truly a special person gifted with an unique talent. She's developed this talent to help the animals in her charge which is a truly admirable goal. I love that Zane wants to know Chloe for Chloe even with her talent! Zane shows Chloe that she's special and unique woman. Zane can be bossy and demanding yet it marks him as the Alpha he will become and already is. Alcuin and Valamir are both good and bad in different ways. Alcuin wants to help others with little to no gain from it. Valamir, on the other hand, wants to possess Chloe because she intrigues him. He resorts to trickery and mind games to get what he wants. I will definitely be continuing with this series.
