Overview

These interactive books will take parents and young children on a reading and writing adventure together. They relive the fun of a special event—a visit to Grandmother's house, a trip to the zoo, their birthday, or a family holiday—by recording it in these books. Children become the books' authors as they finish the sentences using their own words and paste photographs or draw pictures to illustrate them.

Completing a book helps young and beginning readers improve their vocabulary, reading, and writing skills. Each book also introduces other skills kids can work on such as measuring, comparing, counting, understanding family relationships, expressing emotions, and learning family traditions.

Each Interactive Book about Me will bring repeated enjoyment and skill development as children share reading the book aloud with parents, family members, and friends. "She read it to everyone in our family including our dogs, guinea pig, and hamster! She was very proud of it. I saw her with it at least one to two times a day."—Dottie F., grandmother of 7-year-old

"I really liked working on this with David. He is very happy to have a book about himself, by himself. It was lots of fun and a lovely finished product."—Debby A., mother of 6-year-old

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
The reader is invited to personalize this book. First, it is necessary to choose a holiday to highlight by finishing the sentence: “One of my favorite holidays is called...” Other fill-in-the-blank statements follow, including responses for why the family celebrates this chosen holiday, what the reader does to help, and why it is a favorite. A generic calendar provides spaces to fill in the month, year, and dates so the reader can count down the days. Other pages offer opportunities for showing favorite colors and decorations associated with the holiday, descriptions of the weather and apparel, and places and people visited. Pages about foods, holiday stories, and gifts are followed with some summary pages and a suggestion for making a new tradition for the holiday. The illustrations feature attractive animals dressed as people. Each page has large blank spaces for readers to fill with their own photographs and drawings. This is a fun, interactive book for a caring adult to share with a special child. Part of the “Interactive Book about Me!” series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.; Ages 5 to 8.
