Overview

I Need an Angel

During his reign as 2003's American Idol, it was obvious that Ruben Studdard, with his bellowing vocals, has his roots firmly planted in the gospel tradition. While his hit-and-miss debut, Soulful, uncharacteristically found the jovial Studdard slumming with raunchy rapper Fat Joe on the track "What Is Sexy," on I Need an Angel he returns to his church upbringing. Although the "Velvet Teddy Bear" still fails to recapture on record the charisma that he exhibited on television, he sounds more convincing singing the Lord's praise than he did trying to convey a big and sexy image. The disc includes three new songs, including the R. Kelly–penned title track and "We Have Not Forgotten," written by and featuring Studdard's own idol, Fred Hammond (the track originally appeared on Soulful). The remaining songs are R&B-tinged renditions of classic black church staples. Standouts include Studdard's impassioned version of Hammond's "Running Back to You" and a stirring, choir-backed rendition of Walter Hawkins's "Goin' Up Yonder." With his Angel guiding him, Studdard's career is back on the right path.

I'd hoped Ruben would do something musically like this album and he's done it beautifully. What an amazing voice and a wonderful choice of songs. Can't say enough.

To be honest, I was disappointed with this CD. Some songs were well done, but overall I thought that Rueben lacked passion and conviction. To me that's what Gospel music is all about! I thought that Rueben kind of lost his edge.

Ruben shines like no other on this ablum and I am glad that is letting the world know with this album that he can not do only one genre and that his voice is versatile.

This artist is definitely a breath of fresh air. Studdard's new album INAA is not traditional old school gospel, but there is a new breed of contemporary gospel artist that has been emerging for some time now. I could see people of the old school saying, leave the traditional alone, it is supposed to be sung the same old way, and I have to respect them for that. But, every artist needs a space to breathe in this industry. Why can't a contemporary artist bring something NEW to the table. This album was well put together. Mr Studdard has a wonderful voice which lends beautifully to what he was trying to accomplish on this album. The song choices are wonderful, and the arrangements are great. This is an album that anyone who can embrace change could enjoy. I agree we all have our own taste in music, it all depends on what flavor we choose. Why not choose a new/different flavor. Who knows you just might love it. Highly recommended.

Ruben sounded very good on this CD. My favorite songs are Shout to the Lord, I need an angel and I surrender all. I definitely think he should stay with gospel music. Even if he doesn't he's still talented in my book.

This is a must have for all that love being blessed by the gift of song. Ruben has such a beautiful and annointed voice I am just floored at how great the album really is. My standout favorites are I Need An Angel, Amazing Grace, Running Back to You & Center of My Joy. This will definately be on constant repeat in my cd players for awhile.
