My favorite from Jill up until now has been Pink Pearl, but once again she has outdone herself! I have a new favorite song in Pilar from the Things Here Are Different album, which was produced by Todd Rungren. Go and buy the album, then write me and tell me what ''surry'' means!

Whenever I have a very large frown on my face, there is only one cd that can make me get glad in the same shoes I got mad in, and it's this one. Jill Sobule is beyond creative and all her songs are wonderful.

Jill Souble had a hit with I Kissed A Girl, the first openly lesbian love song to hit the top 40. That is on this greatist hits compilation, along with other musical gems from her four albums. If you like what you hear from this album, buy her others.

''I Never Learned To Swim'' is an absolute must for every CD collector who likes listening to a a great singer performing songs with a catchy melody and good lyrics. You don´t know Jill Sobule´s great music at all ? There is no better way than this CD to see how great her music is and which broad variety of styles and moods she represents. You know some of her fantastic songs yet ? Then you also need to get this, really being a best-of-CD of hers. Every song on ''I Never Learned To Swim'' is a treasure. Many people know her hit ''I Kissed A Girl'' but Jill Sobule has showed various styles: ''Bitter'' rocks, ''Houdini´s Box'' has a smooth style and the person in this song is shown to be scared and vulnerable by the style of performance, ''Claire'' has a very funny mood, ''Big Shoes'' is a really catchy pop song, listening to ''Smoke Dreams'' you think of being in a good Jazz Bar....... - every song has a special mood, every song has intersting lyrics and you will be listening very often to this CD, because it´s great music ! My only problem regarding this CD is: there are much more than 15 great songs Jill Sobule has released so far - you will need to buy more of her CD´s if you have listened to ''I Never Learned To Swim''.

Jill Sobule's career is much much more than ''Supermodel'' or ''I Kissed A Girl.'' Sobule is quirky, catchy, and deep and you have to blame MTV and top 40 radio for pigeon-holing an incredible artist. If you want to hear a true talent, ''I Never Learned To Swim: Best of Jill Sobule,'' will be the beginning of a fine romance.

This ''best of'' collection is a good way to enjoy the wide variety of Jill Sobule's music. It contains a good cross-section of her wit and musical styles, which range from stories like ''Margaret'' to the haunting ''Houdini's Box''. The liner notes include a brief comment by Sobule about each song. For example, about ''Resistance Song'': ''Every record of mine must have at least one WWII reference.'' Two of the songs, ''Big Shoes'' and ''Smoke Dreams'', were previously unreleased. ''Big Shoes'' is a tale of a young girl teased about her orthopedic shoes. But leave your angst at the door. It's light-hearted and easy to relate to for anyone teased as a child. ''Stoned Soul Picnic'' was the only Sobule track on a Laura Nyro tribute collection. ''Bitter'', ''When My Ship Comes In'' and ''Love Is Never Equal'' are from the increasingly hard to find ''Happy Town'' album. And, of course, it contains her popular single, ''I Kissed A Girl''. This is a great introduction to Sobule's work or a good way to have some of her best in one convenient package.

Most people, if they know Jill Sobule at all, know her from ''I KIssed a Girl.'' For those who want to know more (and everyone should), here's a compilation disc of her material that will make converts. ''I Never Learned to Swim'' ranges musically from folky accoustic stuff to some edgy power pop. But what really makes Jill Sobule stand out is the sense of intelligence and wit that comes across in both her lyrics and her vocals. Songs like ''Karen By Night,'' ''Heroes'' and ''Big Shoes'' are simply must-haves, and there's not a weak tune on this entire disc. The only reason Jill Sobule has not become a major star is because her music is too intelligent for traditional radio programming. You'll have to discover her for yourself. Here's where you start.

As if every one of Jill's albums hasn't been a ''Best of'', this one really is. Whether you're her biggest fan, you only know her for ''I Kissed A Girl'', or you don't know her at all, BUY THIS CD!!! I don't know of any singer/songwriter who has a wittier or more bitting take on life and love. Her lyrics are so on! And if you find yourself able to not groove and sign-along to the Partridge Family-esque tune ''Big Shoes'', you need professional help. Jill ROCKS!!

This CD has 'the cream of the crop' of Jill Sobule's music. It should appeal to people with broad musical tastes, as it is a good sampling of all of Jill's work - drawing from all of her CDs, and all of the styles she encorporates into her music. It is a CD that has definite replay value - I listen to it on a regular basis, and I've had it for a few months now. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a CD that they can enjoy, and artistry they can appreciate, for a long time.
