Overview

In the '50s and '60s Bobby "Blue" Bland was every female blue fan's fantasy man. His voice was soft and sexy, but he could also soar into an emotion-fueled falsetto as he sang about being wounded, done wrong, or rejected. This two-CD set assembles some of Bland's finest early material for Duke Records. Among the 44 cuts are such R&B chart-toppers as "I'll Take Care of You," "Farther Up the Road," and "Little Boy Blue," and rarely heard tunes like "Army Blues" and "Wishing Well." It also contains "Two Steps from The Blues," the title cut from one of the best soul blues albums ever made. Cut at a time when America was on the move, migrating toward industrial centers, popular music was also evolving, from pretty ballads and gentle dance numbers to unleashed soul. Bobby Bland was one of the artists who made it happen.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Bill Dahl
Everything the young Bland waxed for Duke between 1952 and the 1960 date that produced "Cry, Cry, Cry" and the R&B-laced "Don't Cry No More." From 1955 on, this is uniformly seminal stuff, Bland's vocal confidence growing by the session and buttressed by the consistently innovative riffs and solos of guitarists Clarence Hollimon, Wayne Bennett (he's amazing on a torrid "You Did Me Wrong"), Roy Gaines and Pat Hare. "Farther Up the Road," the exotic ballad "Hold Me Tenderly," "Little Boy Blue," and the title track are but few of the two-disc collection's many standouts. No blues fan should be minus this set!
