Overview

During World War II, the Japanese invaded a Dutch colony located in South East Asia called the Netherlands or the Dutch East Indies. They created havoc and destroyed many lives.

"I survived camps Baciro and Pundung" follows the trials and tribulations of a Dutch family and one of their young sons in particular, while living on the idyllic island of Java, situated in the Dutch East Indies (today known as Indonesia). This pertinent story of innocent lives getting caught up in a world of politics, illustrates how a happy and carefree childhood was changed overnight into a seemingly never-ending nightmare.
After years of being imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp, Dutch nationals were, instead of being liberated, interned again, this time in Indonesian prison or 'Bersiap" camps. During this period of violence and chaos, local nationalists and freedom fighters engaged in the most gruesome guerilla warfare tactics to ultimately succeed and attain the country's independence. All Dutch nationals were considered enemies of the state. The Japanese and the native nationalists spared no one. This is a true story.
