This is the story of one women's survival, first in the Soviet Union before and during World War II, and later, her long trek to the United States. It is the story of occupation by two armies, first German and then American. The vivid description of people and locales will make you feel as if you are living it yourself. Her efforts to make herself fit into an American way of life cause some comical incidents and some eye-opening surprises. Later she travels back to Germany, not as a Displaced Person this time, but as an American citizen and sees for herself the huge difference between the two worlds. Clara Sofia Tkaczenko Shore was born in the former Soviet Union in 1923. Her early childhood years were spent living in several coal mining settlements. Later the family moved to Taganrog and there she finished her schooling.
