Walter Crofter was born into Elizabethan England.
In a country and a time where favor and politics were both deadly, can an honest boy stay true to himself? Especially given his family background?
I, Walter is the first in a series of books in a saga which will span continents and time to arrive in present day North America.
Each in the series will be connected, though that connection may not be obvious for several more books.
It's almost like looking at a menorah (sic).. Many lines, seemingly individual, connect to center at different points.

This is book 1 in the eternity series and it centers on Walter who is trying to get away from his mundane, working class family so he decides to join the Merchant Marines. The book shows the challenges he faces on both land and sea and he helps people and fights pirates. Then things change when he finds Maria who was a captive on a pirate ship. He finds that he has feelings for her and that he needs to find a way to prove that he is worthy of her. He fights through a world of action, danger, lust, greed and love. The title didn't really interest me much and I thought that maybe something more interesting could have been used. Luckily the series name caught my attention. The writing in rich in detail and is descriptive enough that you can imagine some of the scenes and make you feel certain emotions. That is the sign of a good writer if they can make you feel like you have lived the scenes.
3.5 stars Did I enjoy this book: I liked I, Walter, but I honestly didn’t fall in love. Walter is a good solid character, and I enjoyed the love story with Maria. It was sweet and made me go “awww” a few times, but truly the story fell a little flat for me. There were moments I wanted to be on the high seas with Walter and his crew–the problem was the flashbacks got in the way. They would pull me out of the story of young Walter just so Maria could help old Walter reflect. By the time I got back to the young Walter story I had to take another few pages to get back into the book. This process made it harder for me to finish the book even though I loved the characters. Would I recommend it: I think there’s a 50/50 chance I’d recommend this one. As reviewed by Gina at Every Free Chance Books. Walter lived life with a passion for adventure. As I sit here ready to tell you all my thoughts reading “I, Walter”, I think “Wow” what a big undertaking this is. However, the most important thing to remember is that because of Mike Hartner, “I, Walter” has been a great privilege to read. Rarely do you find an author who can display such compassion that as you read you become the characters; you live the moment, you feel what they feel; but then you realize you are floating above the characters…watching their story come to life before your eyes! Here is the story of a boy coming from nothing; not knowing where he was going or where he would end up, but willing to see what life brings and take on the challenges; weighing out the right and wrong choices for each task so he can make his decision for the right. This is done throughout a life, his life, nobly and without hesitation. Yet, each of his challenges seems to become greater as he matures despite his best effort to eliminate them. Toward the end we learn all things have a reason for happening…I can’t give any more than that or I would tell you the end. Sooooo he decides to pen the story of his life…And, Oh what a story! There is excitement with sword fights, piracy, sailing on the high seas, unrequited love. All of the things a good book will give you. This book is the first of the series and is a MUST READ!!!
This a fantastic heart-warming coming-of-age tale of learning what it means to be a man of honor who possesses chivalry. The adventures drew me in and held me captive, and my heart sighed with Walter and Maria's romance. I am always moved by stories of what two individuals will endure to build a life together. Thank you, Mike, for making my evenings grand and filling my imagination and heart with your cast of characters. I look forward to book two!
