Like all books of short stories, some are stronger than others. I liked the series of stories (mini-novel, really) set in South America. Some of the stories will not make much sense unless you have read either the Nantucket alternate history or the "Dies the Fire" series, but most of the stories stand alone with good characterization, plotting and pace. It is typical Stirling fare, so if you're a fan you'll like this. If you don't know Stirling, you might try one of his novels first.

Excellent set of short stories, some with connections to larger works and some that could be developed further.

S. M. Stirling is a competent writer. These stories are well done, but they do presume a familiarity with the universes of his longer novels. He is very fond of military adventures, apocalyptic worlds and alternative history, so that is what you will find here. I particularly liked the BOLO stories as the world and the characters were interesting and well developed. A definite must read for Stirling fans.
