If...: Questions for Parents by Evelyn McFarlane

Parenting is the most profound and life-changing experience we can have as human beings. Perhaps no area is more fertile ground for speculation—what kind of parent do I want to be?—or more perfectly suited for Evelyn McFarlane and James Saywell's provocative questions.

If you could be seven years old again for one whole day, knowing what you know now, how would you spend it? If you were to finish the sentence "The best thing about being a parent is . . . ," what would you say? If you could undo one thing your parents did, what would it be? If you were asked what the most difficult thing you ever had to explain to your children was, how would you answer? If you were to name the absolute best gift you ever received as a child, what would it be?

As the fifth book in the bestselling If . . . series, Questions for Parents takes America's favorite parlor game to an entirely new level. This collection of 500 original questions is perfect for siblings and family reunions, as well as expectant and new parents. Chal-lenging and astonishing, this book will inspire conversations, stimulate favorite memories, and reveal sides of your friends and family that you never knew existed.

Not religious and not too out there. I took a long car ride with my parents and we asked all the questions in this book. Had a lot of laughs and most of all really got to know each other. I am giving it out as easter presents.... Love that it is hardcover and not too expensive

This is a fun book to get people involved together and to challenge people to think about their lives and what is important or interesting to them. Whose mind would you want from history, what three musicians from history would you jam with, what medical cure would you want to discover? The questions keep us thinking and give a glimpse of our friends and family that we might not have had. This book is also good for classrooms where students have to write essays, though for younger students, the questions should be carefully selected as they can be a little provacative. I highly recommend this book, even if it's for sitting alone and pondering the many questions.

As someone who is considering parenthood seriously, I found this book quite amazing. The questions it poses explore the whole issue of being a parent [and being the child of one] from angles and into corners I never would have thought of, and does it in an enjoyable, provocative but not discouraging way. I found it uplifting, encouraging, revealing, and very supportive, and surprised myself with a lot of my own answers. For each and every parent, soon-to-be parent, or for that matter, family-oriented person, I highly recommend it. The questions are timeless.

In one of my classes (sophomore in highschool) my teacher will pull out her 'if..' book when we have some spare time and ask various questions (non-sexual ones of course.) It's a lot of fun and helps us get to know eachother better. Its cool for all ages.

An amazing book. Light but poignant. When I worked in a restaurant, the waiters would blurt out questions to each other in between tables or when on breaks. Really enjoyed it at our last company Christmas party! I'm giving it to Mom this year, to make her think!
