Overview

This is not your typical happily ever after...

Lauren Brooks wants to do three things: Escape the small town she grew up in, get accepted to her dream school in Chicago, and graduate without drowning in debt. Now she's working her ass off to do just that.

With a full course load and a waitressing job at one of the hottest night clubs in Chicago, she does not have time for distractions;namely ones who only want to get into her pants. She's been burned before.
Only a fool goes for a second round.. With just two semesters left until graduation, everything's on track.

Until she meets Cal. Enter distraction.

At six-foot-two, with ebony hair, deep grey eyes, and a smile that could only hide an agenda, she knows he's trouble. And for the first time in her life, a little trouble might be just what she needs.

No what she wants.

It isn't like she'd ever marry the guy.
Until she does.

What she thinks will be her happily ever after, is only the beginning.
Cal has a secret. One that makes loving him come with a price, and being his wife cost more than she bargained for.

and then bought the rest of the books in the series. Well worth it and I did not get upset like I have done with other series that require an additional purchase.

The storyline was intriguing and kept me hooked. However, I had to knock a star off because of the poor writing. This story really needs some good editing. Many of the sentences don't flow because of poor writing.  If you can ignore that, definitely worth a read!

WOW.. If I Break by Portia Moore is like a Lifetime movie. Through the whole book, Portia describes everything with vivid detail. Each character plays a significant role, even if it might not have seemed like it. Lauren loves Cal with all of her heart, she just doesn't understand why he is always on "business trips" or if he even contacts her, its through text. Raven and Angela would have to be my favorite characters, always understanding, never judgmental, loving, and are always there for Lauren. I know a lot of other reviewers have said that they didn't like Cal, but the whole time I was reading, I was rooting for him and Lauren. As the reader, I predicted many outcomes, but what actually happens at the end is so unexpected and surreal, I had to reread the page(s) a couple of times. Portia Moore has definitely written an original story, thought of outside the box. It is the first piece of her's that I have read, and I already signed up to receive her newsletters. All I have to say, is to indulge yourself in this story, and you will be taken on one bizarre ride. Thank you Portia Moore for allowing me to read and review this wonderfully written story, for an honest review!! Cannot wait for the sequel to come out, and I am STILL rooting for Lauren and Cal <3

This books story line is very unique, and despite the spelling errors and wishy washy main female role, and had me hooked. There were a few issues with the main character. She would flip personalities from being timid and shy, to overly demanding and high maintenance. While I do understand where the author is going, most of her rage and out bursts detract from the story. As well as the long inner monologues. Yes, we get it that Lauren obsessively pines for Cal. No need to beat us over the head with it. Also, there are some continuity errors. At one point Lauren is driving a Mercedes (or a BMW can't remember for sure) but then litterally 2 pages later the aunt that she is visiting mentions her Audi sitting in the driveway...these things need to be cleared up. As Well as the mix up of some homophones....lye is a chemical, and not what you do in a bed. A second ed. Would be a good idea. Not by any means is this book a literary master piece, but it is an entertaining read. I wish I could give it more stars.

All I can say is awesome. I read the whole series in 5 days. First book caught me hook, line and sinker. I laughed. I cried and I got frustrated. Coundn't pick a favorite. Both men had qualities I loved and hated.

Second, the content of this story deserves a rating of at least a 10 which could pertain to legally challenging. Great imagination of Portia Moore to put this story together, I had a hard time putting this book down. I hope the sequel is as engrossing.

3.75 stars- IF I BREAK is an adult, contemporary, mystery romance by Portia Moore.  The focus of the storyline is on Lauren Brooks and Cal Scott who first meet back in 2008 while Lauren is working as a waitress at a local club.  The storyline is told from first person POV (Lauren) and follows three separate timelines that eventually meet in 2013.   The premise follows Lauren and Cal’s relationship from their first meeting through courtship, romance, love and marriage, and during the ensuing years Cal’s mysterious work commitments take their toll on his young wife. He is secretive about the actual work he does for his best friends’s father’s company-the long hours, the travel and the available perks.  Lauren lives in luxury wanting nothing but her husband whose frequent disappearances have resulted in a shrew of a woman in Lauren. Lauren’s character is not reflected in a positive way. We are introduced to a young woman who is more of an old shrew than a happy wife but then again, we meet her at a time in her life when everything has fallen apart.  She is a difficult character to like. Cal is an enigma. We know very little about the man, only as much as Lauren has told us, and in this, is the conundrum. Lauren, herself, knows very little about the man to whom she has married.  The only constant is his professing undying love for Lauren and his best friend Dex (and wife Helen). Cal has a secret that will destroy everything he has with Lauren and more. The relationship between Lauren and Cal is filled with sensual love, sex (mostly implied) and mystery. Cal is a man so in love with his wife he will do almost anything to keep her happy-almost. In this, he is a man who disappears on numerous occasions with no explanation or cause.  The secondary characters are numerous and play an integral part in the story when Cal disappears from Lauren’s life. There is a definite story behind Cal’s best friend Dex and it is one I would like to see brought to life in another storyline. IF I BREAK is an interesting and suspense filled, albeit slow to build, storyline with a twist of epic proportions. I was in the ball park about the reveal but in the wrong section-close but not quite close enough. The presentation and execution of the story is a little awkward especially with the continual bouncing between three time lines and some important information seems to have been lost in the telling (or was kept from the reader on purpose i.e. Steve’s involvement and introduction). IF I BREAK is the first instalment in Portia Moore’s new adult series. The storyline is open ended and there is so much more to tell. Let’s hope Portia Moore has plans to continue Lauren and Cal’s story. I am hoping for a happily ever after but I am not sure how Portia will be able to rectify Cal’s secret to keep  everyone in the storyline, and the reader, happy.

The storyline was awesome and original. There were a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes. I was intrigued the whole way through the book and never knew what was coming at the end. I will definitely look into the other stories in the series.

That kept the pages turning. The story needs some serious editing. A good plot line, but I have some issues with the main character. Does she think that she is a victim? She is allowing it all to happen. Even when she is rightfully angry she allows her... lady parts to give in and forgive, then she is angry again afterward. I liked the plot though and the twist. I just can't get myself to get the next book. Kind of tough to read and I gave up on the main character.

If ever there was a story that ripped my heart out, tore it to shreds, and tossed it in a wastebasket...this is it. I've never cried so much over a book in my life, it definitely broke me. I had mixed emotions about Cal. He's a jerk but he wasn't always a jerk. Great story!

1. Buy the complete series. 2. Rest up, because once you start to read, you won't want to stop. 3. Send your family away. 4. Turn off your phone. 5. Enjoy. This was unlike any other book or series I have read. I was consistently surprised by the twists and turns.

3/4 wordy fluff, 1/4 story. Lauren needs a life. Even as a trophy wife she could volunteer as a docent. Awful book with any substance at the end.
