Ikigami is both a series of intense psychological studies as well as a modern day display of the power of the human spirit. In addition, it also examines in great detail the effect and emotions one would experience when their job is literally a harbinger of death. I especially like that the stories show both positive and negative reactions to receiving the death notice. In all cases, the characters are very sympathetic and relateabe, making the drama very engaging and viceral. But above all else, the idea of a government killing off a small part of its population at random to encourage appreciation of life is deliciously Orwellian in tone which is something I really enjoy. If you want to prove to someone that manga isn't all cute girls and fantasy action, introduce them to Ikigami.
