Manuel Alvarado doesn't know life without war. Since he was born, the Colombian government has been battling left-wing guerrillas. And no one can avoid the violence and terror. When he is old enough, Manuel joins the military-but he pays the ultimate price. Because of Manuel's military ties, insurgents brutally murder his father.
To make matters worse, Manuel's two brothers become guerrillas. They have little choice; it's either that or death. Through it all, Manuel perseveres, and then he learns of news that will change his life forever: he has a son in the United States. His new mission is clear: escape from Colombia and find a way into California, where his son supposedly lives.
It's a story of tragedy, triumph, and a father's unconditional love.
