Throughout the volume Bolden incorporates a rich variety of primary sources, such as diaries, newspaper articles, letters, and other historical documents, providing richly textured, multidimensional viewpoints. This is a beautifully written book that succeeds in telling simple truths about being a black child in America. There are memories and reminiscences of slaves, autobiographical snippets from Paul Robeson, Dorothy West, and Margaret Walker, as well as autobiographical material from lesser-known individuals.
