For as long as I can remember, my Grandmother kept a diary. Now that she is no longer with us, these journals of her days are family treasures. There is rarely anything extraordinary in these diaries, rather just a simple record of her days, from who visited or called on the phone to the weather. Each entry is heartwarming, and I hope to someday have a record like this to share with my family. The “Illuminate Your Story Journal” is a beautiful way to start journaling and perhaps create something that I can pass down to my children. The journal is beautiful from cover to cover. The hardcover journal has a cloth binding and measures 6.2 x 1 x 8.2 inches. I love this size for drawing and journaling. Each page is large enough to write down your thoughts for the day without feeling overwhelming. There is an elastic pen loop on the spine to store your favourite pen. I love that the spine opens completely to lay flat while I am writing. There is also an elastic closure to keep your journal closed and a ribbon marker to help you keep your place. The journaling pages are lined and there is an inspirational quote at the top. I love these quotes for those days where words just don’t flow easily because it gives me something to reflect on. The paper is heavy, and non-bleed which is important when using markers and pens, especially for left-handed people like me. My favourite part of the “Illuminate Your Story Journal” is the lettering. I love to collect fonts on my computer, and I am so excited to learn how to create my own letterings. There are examples for each letter of the alphabet, and some letters have two variations. Each example has a step-by-step visual and written instruction to guide you through creating amazing letters. Each letter starts with the simplest shapes and continues to add more detail to create a beautiful letter. I used a plain sheet of paper to begin my lettering practice because I was reluctant to make the pages in my book appear messy. After struggling to get the right dimensions for my letter, I realized how important the graph paper was to help keep the proportions of each letter correct. Next time I will practice directly in the book and use the graph paper to help me with my size. I love how there is really no ‘right or wrong’ way to create your letter. Once the basic shape is in place, you can add your favourite details and flourishes. Taking the time to focus on a letter helps get me into the mindset to write. It is like a meditation tool that helps me to get into a reflective mindset. When I draw, I block out all external distractions and focus on the task at hand. When I have completed my letter, I feel calm and ready to write. In addition to the lettering instructions, the book covers the “History of Illuminated Letters”. This is very interesting to read through to understand the various styles of letters in the book. My favourite feature of the journal is the “Keepsakes” folder inside the back cover. It is a place to store your treasures like handwritten notes or favourite photos. I love to store the special notes and pictures that my children give me in the folder. The “Illuminate Your Story Journal” is a beautiful journal that will be cherished throughout generations. The “Illuminate Your Story Journal” Is the perfect companion to the “Faith and Lettering Journal” and “The Illustrated Word – An Illuminated Bible Coloring Journal“. * Disclosure: I received a complimentary “Illuminate Your Story

The Illuminate Your Story journal doubles as a how-to guide for drawing illuminated letters as were popular in medieval art, and while there is space for journaling – complete with inspirational quotes – most of the little book is dedicated to demonstrating how to draw these intricate illuminated letters. For someone like me with absolutely no artistic ability, this is a bit intimidating but for my creative hubby it’s like Christmas morning. Which, incidentally, means this would be a great Christmas gift idea for the creative on your shopping list! Done in partnership with the Museum of the Bible, this is very well done as a whole – the cover feels great to hold and the cloth binding with the pen loop provides a great texture contrast as well, not to mention the high-quality pages inside. (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)

The Illuminate Your Story Journal, Write On! Do you have a journal, or have you thought of starting one? An exciting new way to write is to use an illustrated art journal, and here is you should consider. This volume has lovely, embossed hardback covers that feel really good to the touch, and are nice to look at. High quality cardstock that should hold up to all kinds of ink without bleeding through to the other side is found throughout. This book has a substantial feel, it will easily stay open while adding thoughts, contain lots of pages devoted to journaling, and has a presentation page for the owner. The Illuminate Your Story Journal from The Museum of the Bible, was inspired by beautiful manuscripts from bygone days. This journal will tell you how to make good-looking letters similar to the ones at the beginning of books from times past. The first few pages of the journal tell the history of illuminating writing along with instructions to re-create them yourself. By following the pointers, and using the practice pages, you will learn how to add attractive, intricate letters and flourishes to your own special thoughts. Sprinkled throughout the volume are inspiring quotations from the Bible along with other well-known figures. You will find a holder on the spine that stretches to keep your favorite writing instrument handy, as well as, a built-in bookmark to keep your place. This compact journal will be easy to take with you, and be at your fingertips whenever you have the urge to express yourself. Journaling in such a nice book will give you the feeling of creating art, and you can try your hand at illumination. You are sure to have a new journaling experience! This creative journal is one that will be enjoyed by artists and fans of creative lettering. The introduction includes 4-5 pages of the history of illumination through the ages, described the process, and included a supply list for the reader. The creation of the traditional designs are shown in a step-by-step method which I found to be very helpful. There are designs for each letter of the alphabet, with two designs for many of the more used letters, as well as step-by-step practice for flourishes, birds, and other artistic elements. There are journal pages in between each layout of lettering with inspirational quotes that I found enlightening and appreciated that they were from a wide variety of sources. The construction of the book is obviously high quality with an embossed hardcover, a cloth spine that makes the book lay flat when opened, an elastic pen loop on the spine, and a keepsake sleeve inside the back cover with a ribbon bookmark and and elastic band to hold the book closed. The paper is sturdy and perfect for drawing and coloring as well as writing. This would make a fine gift for ages as young as 12 if they are interested in art and drawing. (I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

Illuminate Your Story has a lovely cream colored cover with a simple yet elegant embossed design. There is a nice texture to it. The binding is almost like a grosgrain ribbon in texture and there is an elastic pen loop which is a very nice touch. There is also an elastic band that can be used to either keep the journal closed or to mark a specific page. The flyleaf is elegant. Other than the introduction pages, they are bright white. There are journaling pages that are ruled and have quotes from the Bible and various people ranging from Abraham Lincoln to Eddie Cantor. A large percentage of the book is dedicated to showing how to create illuminated letters, which are those large, beautiful capital letters you see in older, heavily embellished books. There are six different styles that are described and used. They are clever and whimsical and elaborate and everything in between. I consider this more for instruction and practice rather than for use as an everyday journal as the number of journaling pages is so small compared to the lettering pages. With the price of art books, this is a great book to get to learn how to do illuminated letters. I am pleased with this and look forward to experimenting with the concepts. This is an instructional for illuminated letters. You know those beautiful drop caps that start a story in the old books. This is for each letter of the alphabet with five step illustrations, breaking down the illustrated letter. Then there is space for you to develop your own or copy theirs. After that there is a journaling space that starts with a beautiful quote from different sources. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. The Ellie Claire Art Journals make for unique gift ideas this Christmas. These journals are made of high quality paper and binding with exquisite attention to detail, including pen loops on the binder and elastic band closures. A great gift for the art lover on your list. As with the other journals, the quality is excellent. This journal comes with an elastic band to keep it closed and a band on the cover for your pen. There is space to take sermon notes or use this as a prayer journal. However, the majority of this journal is focused on creating fancy lettering. There are step-by-step instructions that lead you through the process. As a result, for gift-giving, this journal is very specific in nature. I’m not artistic, so I found the journal beautiful but impractical. My daughter loved it. I received a free copy of this book from the author/publisher in order to provide my honest and fair opinion of the book.

This is such a wonderful journal because it teaches you step by step how to create beautiful illuminated letters that will enhance your Bible journaling or any type of artwork where you will use lettering. I loved the instructions because they were so easy to follow. I actually took this one to my doctor office appointments to work on while waiting and it was great! I was able to follow each step and learned how to make several gorgeous letters that I will definitely use in my new Illustrating Bible. The paper quality is wonderful! I was able to use my permanent black fine liner in the book and did not see any shadowing on the next page. I used my art makers as well as my watercolor markers in this book and the paper held up really well with all these things. I started out using pencil to learn the letters then went over them with the black fine liner and then used my art and watercolor markers to enhance the letters with color. I love how I was able to make each one my own yet they looks so beautiful because of the great instruction! There are also some blank pages for practice or for actually journaling. I absolutely LOVE this journal and am having so much fun working through the letters then using what I've learned in my artwork. It's especially special for my Bible! I highly recommend this journal and give it 5 out of 5 stars. This journal was provided to me by Worthy Publishing. I received a copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations while reading, drawing and writing in this journal.

What I liked about this book was how you are walked through different lettering and ways to flourish the letters of the alphabet. I will admit it was a bit difficult because I am not overly artistic but I wish I was. But I enjoyed trying. A copy of this book was given to me. All opinions are my own.
