Illusions (Laurel Series #3) by Aprilynne Pike

"I don't do patrols, I don't go hunting, I just stick close to you. You live your life, I'll keep you safe," Tamani said, sweeping a lock of hair from her face. "Or die trying."

Laurel hasn't seen Tamani since she begged him to let her go last year. Though her heart still aches, Laurel is confident that David was the right choice.

But just as life returns to normal, Laurel realizes that a hidden enemy lies in wait. Once again, Laurel must turn to Tamani to protect and guide her, for the danger that now threatens Avalon is one that no faerie thought would ever be possible.

I read the book in a day. It did drag in some areas but was a really good read. I must say that im a little dissapointed as this is only half a book. And now we have to wait how long for a follow up? We only end up with one answer and an anticlimatic ending. And pay another 9.99 to finish. I feel a bit let down by the author.

These books are really entertaining and fun, but are terribly non-conclusive. I found it hard to get back into the story because there was such a long wait between book releases. I guess I just didn't enjoy it as much as I could have. My recommendation is that if you haven't started the series yet, wait until they are all written. If you liked this series, you might also like the "Wicked Lovely" series by Melissa Marr, "Nightshade" by Andrea Cremer, and "I am Number Four" by Pittacus Lore.

Brought to you by guest reviewer Jennifer Jensen *Beware of Spoilers* At the conclusion of Spells, Laurel has chosen between her human boyfriend David and her fairie could-be boyfriend, Tamani. She thinks it is for the best that she and Tamani don’t speak again for the sake of her relationship with David. At the beginning of Illusions, Tamani inserts himself back into Laurel’s life, attending her school and masquerading as a human teenage boy to guard over Laurel. Laurel once again becomes confused over her feelings between David and Tamani, and David’s jealousy of Tamani eventually drives Laurel to break up with David. While Laurel is free of David, she gives in to her passion for Tamani, and wonders what being with him could be like. Meanwhile, a new foreign exchange student has caught Laurel’s and Tamani’s interest. They are certain that she’s a fairie, just like Laurel, who has been raised by human parents. Laurel is unable to get close to Yuki, so Tamani must befriend and faux romance her to find out the secrets that she is hiding. Laurel makes an important discovery about their new friend, just a little too late. I was tentative about even beginning Aprilynne Pike’s series, mostly because there was an author blurb from Stephenie Meyer, whose books I unfortunately did not care for. Once I started reading Wings, I was really interested in Pike’s take on fairies because no other fairie author had come up with anything quite like she has. I absolutely love the mythology tidbits that Pike includes in her novels, especially when she has gone into their history and tells stories of how fairies were involved with Camelot and other civilizations. However, it’s Laurel’s personality and the one dimensional characters that completely ruin these books for me. I was happy to make it past 100 pages without being super annoyed with Laurel and how she treats David and Tamani, and even Chelsea. I think it’s pretty obvious to anyone who has read these books who Laurel really wants to be with–and it’s not David. David doesn’t really have any depth to him; he’s a nice guy, who is smart and attractive, but that is about it. Those characteristics are not enough to attach me to a literary character. Tamani is fleshed out a bit more because of his interesting fairie qualities, but he can also get just as annoying as Laurel. Finally the moment came that I was waiting for–when David and Tamani would break out into the inevitable fight over Laurel. I can’t say this enough–I don’t like Laurel. She says one thing and I really want to believe her, but then her actions go against what she’s just said. Laurel claims that she doesn’t want to string anyone along, but she breaks up with David–and rightly so–because of how he is acting. But then she immediately falls into Tamani’s arms and shares passionate lip locking with him. I lost any like I had for her after she decided to manipulate David into being her date for a dance, but only after her best friend confessed feelings for David to her. Laurel needs to make a choice once and for all; she broke up with David, then made out with Tamani, then decided she couldn’t stand the idea of anyone else with David, so she leads him on some more. Laurel doesn’t deserve a boyfriend, or a best friend who is as loyal as Chelsea.... Review continued at openbooksociety dot com

I loved it! Tamani is my favorite, he sounds so cute. The beginning is a little slow but once you hit the middle you cant stop reading! I was so surprised at the ending! Really well written, it had me guessing throughout the whole book. I cant wait for the next one to come out! Anyone know when it does?

I wish the wings saga would be made into a movie already. Everyone should read these books. I hope Lorael would pick Tam already David is a good person and all but i perdict he'll end up with Chealsie. I still have to buy the third book in the series, but i read the first and second and they were great. I would say reading age is13 and up and i'm 14 and i love it.

I haven't yet read this book or the next one but I know for a fact that i'm Team Tamani. Tamani is so sweet and lovable I have no idea how Laurel could choose Daniel over Tamani. When she yelled at him in the second book I was super pissed and I couldn't believe what she was doing. I just hope that in the next 2 books she realizes that if she lives her life with Daniel he will die about 50 or so years before her. I also hope that she comes to her senses and realizes that Tamani has given EVERYTHING up for Laurel and she still doesn't realize that if he could, he would give even more up just to make her happy. Laurel in my opinion is thickskulled and she can't realize how much Tamani really loves her. It is so annoying and I just hope it gets through her mind. Other than the whole Tamani vs Daniel thing this series is AMAZING so far I can't wait until I can get the next one fron my school library. Except I haven't been able to go to the library since last thursday. Well anyway wish me luck. And if anyone could tell me if it gets through Laurel's thick skull about Tamani I would appreciate it. Thanks for reading!!!

Firstly, this book ends on a huge cliffhanger, which bothered me, but after reading Pike's defense (the last book will only span only a few days), I could understand why. I could accept that. What really bothered me about this book was the love triangle. It was in the rest of the books, and I actually enjoyed it, but this one, it really felt like Pike was intentionally manipulating it. Sure, she's the writer, so she's always manipulating it how she wants, but when it's intentional that she's trying to steer the whole thing in another direction, I have to roll my eyes. It's even worse how quickly the aftermath is cleaned up. It's less messy to kill off a character so that the girl could be with the right guy than it is for the two guys to wage war over her and then after everybody loses, to act like friends. Without all that drama, I would've enjoyed this book much more. I hope Pike doesn't continue outdrawing this love triangle in the next book. I like David and Tamani (though Tamani much less after this book) but I'd rather have one of them killed off in the first chapter of the next book so that Laurel won't continue with this indecisive drivel. Besides that, I enjoyed the rest of the book. Unfortunately, that triangle takes a large chunk of it.

The series is definitely a great read for young adults/teens, especially if you love faries ;). It's great to read a fantasy book like this that doesn't have to do with vampires for once.

I can not wait for the 4th book to come out. This has been one of my favorite series. I am hoping she ends up with Tam, I am over David.

Tamani is the best! I mean david is cool and all, but laurel and david dont work together. David and chealsy are pretty good for each other. And i mean if laurel chooses david again :( then tamani would probably kill himself, he cares for laurel so much. TEAM TAMANI!!! -- romina

I never thought that there was gonna be a movie about this series, but there is. It's coming out in 2013 and Miley Cyrrus is starting as Laurel. Her mom is one of the producers. I think Miley is the worst person to play Laurel. Because Laurel is blonde, Pretty and Miley just doesn't fit for this role. Rather than that I bet the movie is gonna be awsome!Does anyone agree with me?

This is my favorite series ever. The ending was a cliff hanger. The book was very interesting and had alot of drama. I think that this was the best book of the series. The author never disapoints me. I defintaly reccomend this book to everyone.

I have thought that this is a good series since the first book, Wings, and it just keeps getting better with each book. In Illusions, we get a lot more of Tamani which is a GREAT thing, in my opinion. Tamani is still protecting Laurel but this time it is from an unknown threat. Trolls are also still lurking but something has changed which causes the faeries to feel vulnerable. I highly recommend this series to anyone that likes series with adventure, a little suspense, and of course love.

I LOVE this series.....I got the first book, Wings for free & was immediately hooked! The cliffhanger ending didn't bother me so much, I know there will be another great book to follow & can't wait until it comes out! I know a lot of people are Team Tamani but I have to say he's a bit over the top & its kind of annoying....chances are she will be with him in the end but I'm still a Team David fan!! Great book!

Another installment of the Wings series and it did not disappoint. I think I might have even liked this one more than the first two. There is more worry about Trolls and some confusing discoveries regarding them. Khlea is back and there is a new girl to worry about as well. We will see more of Avalon and much more adventure to keep your heart pounding. The one thing that's slightly annoying to me is how wishy washy Laurel is when it comes to David and Tam. I'm still Team David at this point, but I can see how Tamani might be better for her in the long run. The situation with her parents is MUCH better in this book, especially with her mom and that makes me happy. When you reach the end of the book, you will be surprised...and WARNING...this cliffhanger FEELS like a cliffhanger. The first two books felt more like there could be more, but it wasn't urgent. This time (of course when I don't have the next book ready to read yet) it is a huge cliffhanger and I can't WAIT to get to book 4. If you have liked the series so far, or if you like books with Faerie lore in them, you'll enjoy this book!

Wow. This book once again was really good. Illusions by Aprilynne Pike has us jumping from Tamani to Laurel, in terms of who the third person narrator is, which is something that I adore. I think that the book wouldn’t have been good without the little sections of Tamani being the focus that the book wouldn’t have been as good. From the very beginning to the end of the book had me wanting more and more. Laurel is still stuck between wanting to be in a romantic relationship with either David or Tamani. Some people might like the whole love triangle thing but for me I’m just a little bit worried about which scorned lover would turn on Laurel if they were influenced enough from the other side. This book seemed like it was filler which is a good thing since we learned more about Tamani, David, and mostly everyone in this book. We even got to meet and learn more (SPOILER!!) about a new faerie named Yuki (END SPOILER!!). We also learn a lot about her and a little bit more about this troll hunter, that we met in the last book, by the name of Klea. We all know that I hate filler books but this filler books, but I feel this one is a necessary for this series. I am going to be giving Illusions by Aprilynne Pike a five butterflies rating because it was soo good. When I wasn’t reading I was worrying about what Laurel was getting herself into or if Tamani and David would stop trying to be jerks around each other and what type of faerie is Yuki?! All really good questions that got answered in the book, which gave me more questions. That cliffhanger Aprilynne Pike had for us was the worst one ever. Well not the worse one but it sucks to know that I won’t be able to read Destined by Aprilynne Pike for a while. But, wow I can’t wait to read it, when I am able to get my hands on that book. I really want to know what happens for Laurel and her friends. and even more about Yuki. Anyways until next time enjoy this book review brought to you by Baroness’ Book Trove.
