Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
Kurian, the compiler of over a dozen statistical and geographical reference books (e.g., Encyclopedia of the Future, LJ 6/1/96), updates and expands his standard source ranking nations by 300 performance yardsticks. Admitting that few ideal conditions can be met for this compilation, Kurian does an admirable job of reorganizing data from numerous international agencies and popular sources based on their availability, comparability, usability, reliability, and "rankability." Brief narratives introduce each of the 32 sections and 300 topics represented by tables or graphs. All but three sections (Women, Environment, and Global Indexes) were in the third edition (then titled the New Book of World Rankings, Facts on File, 1991). Some previously examined topics are deleted, moved, or rearranged; others, e.g., teen pregnancies and illegitimate births, are new. Data are updated through 1994 or 1995 unless otherwise noted. There are a few minor unit-of-measurement omissions, e.g., rates for breast cancer and suicide, and incomplete citations for tables and for the source appendix make locating original sources difficult. Still, this is recommended as a handy tool for comparing important socioeconomic variables among nations and for ascertaining patterns of development.-Stanley P. Hodge, Ball State Univ. Lib., Muncie, Ind.
