CHAPTER 1

I'm Fred the frayed knot. My knot is all frayed. My fears have unraveled my nice twirly braid.

A frilly frayed knot who sits year after year, I hope to one day be a knot without fear.

I must conquer my fears one step at a time. You could cheer me on as you read what I rhyme.

I know with your help I can d it today. Maybe then I won't look like a knot gone astray.

I'll be totally fearless; I'll have fun in the sun. I'll stop looking as if I'm completely undone. I mad small list of things I'm afraid of. Fuzzy white rope is not all I am made of. You know, one of these fears you just might relate to, so hurry, read on, because I cannot wait to.

I go to the dentist with a terrible toothache, most likely brought on by mom's devil's-food cake.

As I sit in the waiting room, I star to feel dizzy. I ask, "Is it warm?" as I start to get frizzy.

I hear the nurse say, "Is there a knot here name Fred?" I just sit there and tremble as my white rope turns red. I shake in my shoes as I crawl up the chair. By the time I sit down ... wow, I have crazy hair!

He says, "Open wide, and let's take a good look." I think to myself, I'd rather read a good book. He counts my teeth, then takes an X-ray. He fixes my tooth, and my knot has less fray.

My fear of the doctor, of course, is that shot-you know, that small pinch that leaves a red dot? As I sit on the table, I'll tell you no lie, I start screaming and crying, "Why, Mommy, why!"

It is time for my shot, so of course I get fuzzy. Even Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't his fuzzy ... or was he? Then my mom says, "All done," and I must confess: it wasn't so bad, and I'm frayed even less.

On the first day of school, in my boots I am shaking. I feel sick to my stomach; this me I'm not faking.

Mom helps me calm down by holding my hand. She sing my favorite song from my favorite band.

When I get to school, my teacher is sweet. I thought she'd be mean and have really big feet! She'd be cold as tone, a tall pillar of ice, but she's so very friendly, surprisingly nice.
