I'm Going to Tell You a Secret

Released just as her worldwide Confessions tour was hitting the States in the summer of 2006, I'm Going to Tell You a Secret is a CD/DVD package that isn't so much a souvenir of the tour but as a way to advertise it. The DVD contains a lengthy -- over two hours! which is longer than Truth or Dare! -- look at the tour, including its rehearsal plus some performance footage, while the CD offers a 14-track sampler of the set list, heavy on songs from Music, American Life, and Confessions on a Dance Floor. With the notable exception of "Vogue," the oldies on this CD have been given a makeover, so "Into the Groove" and especially "Holiday" feel like they could fit the Eurotrash, campy retro-disco feel of Confessions, while "Like a Prayer" is now a chilled-out come-down tune. Good, logical reworkings one and all, and they help give the disc a cohesive feel even if the live performance, like the album it's hawking, is kind of humorless. That said, as Madonna's first live CD, I'm Going to Tell You a Secret is strong and entertaining, and even if the excessive minutiae on the accompanying DVD means only hardcore fans will sit through its two hours, it's also quite well done. Which means I'm Going to Tell You a Secret serves its purpose well: it will convince anybody who is on the fence about going out to see the 2006 tour to go ahead and buy those expensive tickets already (although years from now, this combination of promotion and retrospective will probably seem odder than it already does).

Look, I love her to death and I saw the last show in the states in Miami and was euphoric the entire time. But to release a "live" album from a show that overflowed with pre-recorded music and vocoder effects just seems ironic at best. I'd prefer they just put out the entire concert on DVD because eventhough the cheers of the audience on the "live" tracks give me goosebumps in anticipation of the Confessions tour, they really sound like little more than studio tracks with applause over them. Without the visuals of the show, these tracks won't really hold up. Good thing there are some performances on the documentary. (Am I gonna buy it though? You bet your a@#! Madonna rules!)

I have to say that seeing Madonna live in concert needs to be on everyone's lists of things to do before you die! She is one of the few stars that I believe is worth paying several hundred dollars for! The CD of the show is great, though some of my favs are missing (crazy for you!!) Best tracks are Nobody Knows Me(completely underrated), Imagine, Susan MacLeod/Into the Groove (LOVE bagpipes) and Holiday!! The documentary is wonderful, entertaining, funny and heartfelt. Be prepared though, her kids steal the show!!

I love this live CD. It brings back a lot of memories I had when I saw her in Las Vegas in 2004 for the Reinvention Tour. This is definately a must-have for any Madonna fan. Long live the queen!

I wasn't really expecting much from this album anyway, because most live albums are usually pretty stale, sounding like any other studio version except with audience cheers in the background. But even so, I was rather disappointed. Most of the songs in the concert weren't even her hit tunes and a cover of John Lennon's Imagine, please! (That song is one of the dumbest ever written.) I know Madonna has that sort of attitude where she only does what she wants to do, but she should realize what her fans want from a concert is simply a showcase of her biggest chart-toppers. Sorry, Madge, I love your music, but this is a disappointing concert.

For starters: Thomas Erlewine writes in his "expert review": "Released just as her worldwide Re-Invention tour was hitting the States in the summer of 2006" Perhaps Thomas Erlewine hasn't realized that "I am Going to Tell You a Secret" was released following the tour not prior. I have a feeling that he wrote his review of Madonna's work prior to it's release and even before he saw it! Nonetheless, I had the pleasure of seeing her live in Miami and in Paris and the shows were spectacular. The DVD of the Reinvention Tour, Paris, France (exclusive industry release) is fine, however cameras can't even come close to capturing the magic and energy of the concert tour I am Going to Tell You a Secret does just that. It picks up where concert footage fails. Both the I am Going to Tell You a Secret DVD and the CD capture the energy of the tour. The DVD goes much further in that it actually teaches you something, a new way of thinking, a new way of seeing the world. It will open up your eyes beyond what's already there. I could care less if the whole package is or is not a promo for the show. Hey! Everyone has to advertise what they're selling and let's face it kids--Madonna is selling her music, her image, her talent! She has to promote herself in the most tasteful and artistic means possible...this CD/DVD combo is just that!

I could hardly wait for this one to come out. It is great. If you are a hardcore Madonna fan, as I am, you will love it too.
