Description: This is a comprehensive, extensively illustrated presentation of the imaging features of arthritis and related conditions. The concise, well-arranged, easy to access descriptions of the radiologic features of joint disease are followed by illustrations of their differential diagnosis, with an extensive list of references at the end of each chapter for further elucidation.
Purpose: The purpose is to bring together, using a multidisciplinary approach, an illustrated discussion of arthritis and various other conditions that can affect joints. The greatest emphasis is on conventional radiography, as this is the modality most commonly used, although CT and MRI are also described in detail.
Audience: The authors have complied this book to assist radiologists as well as clinicians who deal with joint diseases. The primary author, Dr. George B. Greenfield, a noted authority in the field of musculoskeletal radiology, is Professor of Radiology in the Department of Radiology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. John A. Arrington is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Frank B Vasey is Chief of Rheumatology at Tampa General Hospital. These authors, with the several other contributing authors, bring expertise in radiology, rheumatology, orthopedics, pathology, internal medicine, oncology, and pediatrics to this publication.
Features: There are chapters detailing each of the major arthritides followed by reports of typical cases. Other conditions that have overlapping clinical symptoms and imaging features, such as tumors, are also covered. Basic parameters important in the radiographic evaluation of arthritis are described and illustrated. The book concludes with chapters on pathology and surgery related to joint disease. In addition, there are a few color illustrations of histologic specimens of the major arthritides.
Assessment: Although there are basic texts covering some of this material, this book presents several new and important related discussions, including the chapters on MRI of rheumatoid arthritis and common arthritides, pathologic aspects of diseases of the joint and juxta-articular tissues, and surgery and arthritis.
