Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Leslie C. Grammer, MD (Northwestern University Medical School)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a well recognized, classic textbook of immunology. It is authored and edited by recognized authorities in the field, primarily from the U.K. The text covers basic, mechanistic aspects of immunology.
Purpose: The purpose is to make the fascinating subject of immunology understandable to readers at the undergraduate, graduate, and clinical stages of their careers. Because immunology is a rapidly advancing field, this sort of text is essential to provide basic, background information. The book does indeed fulfill the stated objectives.
Audience: The audience for this text would include both graduate and undergraduate students as well as trainees and clinicians in specialties such as allergy, immunology, hematology, and infectious diseases who require extensive knowledge of basic immunologic mechanisms.
Features: This book is an exceptional immunology text because its illustrations are appropriate, colorful, and lucid depictions of the main textual concepts. The references are current and pertinent. The index and table of contents are appropriate. A unique feature of this book is the colorful illustrations of basic immunologic mechanisms and concepts; they result in the attractive overall appearance of the book.
Assessment: Because immunology is a field in which knowledge is expanding exponentially, this new edition is clearly needed. The authors and editors have added two unique features to this edition. At the beginning of each chapter, there is a listing of the key concepts in thechapter, and at the end of each chapter there is a shaded box entitled "critical thinking" that poses questions that could be the basis for in-depth discussion. This is an excellent immunology text with outstanding illustrations. Anyone studying immunology or related fields should have this book available.

This book is in a relatively easy to read format, colour diagrams help illustrate the concepts in the text and one of the most useful features are the comprehensive summary tables throughout the book. Roitts is a good buy if you are particularly interested in Immunology.
