Reviewed by K.J. Simmill for Readers' Favorite Toby had been haunted by dreams so vivid, so real that he questioned his sanity. He dreamt of murder, but that which plagued him seemed to be more than just a dream. Toby was under the care of psychiatrist Dr Louis, who started to have his own theories, ones he shared with Dr Niles, a specialist in such things. It was not long before his fears were confirmed and Toby came face to face with a vision from his dreams. It became painfully clear he was not losing his mind, at least not in the way he first thought. He was not imagining these brutal killings; he was witnessing them. But what if the link wasn't only one way? What if the killer knew Toby was there, watching, and had plans of his own, a motive beyond Toby's understanding, but one to which he is central. Written in alternating case between the first person perspective of the protagonist, Toby, and the third person narrative of other characters, In Between Dreams by Eugene Knight presents an interesting plot that grips the reader's attention. A window opens into a horrific world, to create a focal point of this psychological thriller that will leave the reader trying to pick through details to discover the truth before it is revealed. Murder, deception, secrets, and failings all rise to the surface to set the stage of this well-paced and character-driven tale. While this book is listed as young adult paranormal, I would certainly peg it as a more adult read, spanning the genres from urban paranormal to thriller.
Reviewed by Rabia Tanveer for Readers' Favorite In Between Dreams by Eugene Knight is the story of Toby Ryan, a young man who has his life turned upside down by some turbulent and violent dreams with the tendency to come true. Toby was just a 12-year-old boy when his father was murdered. Now he is a 20-year-old man who lives with his mother. The shock of losing his father so suddenly left his mother wanting, and there is nothing Toby would not do for his mother, even stay with her for the rest of his life. His life has never been easy, but there is something happening that is making it even more difficult. He has extremely violent and cruel dreams in which he sees people being killed. It is very strange, but it feels like these murders are connected to Toby. He cannot help but be lured into this dark world. He has to find a way to stop these murders and find the person who is behind them. Can he do that? Can he stop these murders? Or is there something more sinister happening around him? Eugene Knight did a brilliant job in writing this novel. The element of mystery is great and very well developed. I loved the way Toby was resilient and determined to find a solution to this mystery and everything that was happening around him. I liked the way he took care of his mother, and I loved the fact that he was a well rounded character. I could feel his inner strength. I connected with him from the get-go. In Between Dreams is a must-read novel, especially for people who love mysteries and thrillers. It was very well written and I loved the cover!
